Home U.S. Coin Forum

Hi. Another newbie here.

Finally joined the forums. I am starting a 12 piece gold type set. The information I have learned here about coins and taking pictures of coins, has been very valuable. I learn more here than from all my coin magazines and coin papers. Thanks,,,,,,,,Mike

Welcome, pqgold. A gold type set is a very attractive one. What coins are included in a 12-piece set?

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

    Hi,
I'm another newbie, also a collector of type gold (and gold dollars). What grades are you building your set with? Any luck with eBay? Shows are fairly infrequent in my area, so the internet has really been my main connection with the market.

A 12 piece GOLD type set consists of the following:

    $1 Liberty Head 1849-1854)
    $1 Indian Head (1854-1889)
    $2.5 Liberty Head (1840-1907)
    $2.5 Indian Head (1908-1929)
    $3 Indian Princess (1854-1889)
$5 Liberty Head (1839-1866) (No Motto)
$5 Liberty Head (1866-1908) (With Motto)
    $5 Indian Head (1908-1929)
$10 Liberty Head (1838-1866) (No Motto)
$10 Liberty Head (1866-1907) With Motto)
    $10 Indian Head (1907-1933)
$20 Liberty Head (1850-1866) No Motto
$20 Liberty Head (1866-1907) With Motto
    $20 St. Gaudens (1907-1933)

Not exactly 12 as many count both versions of St. Gaudens gold for example and only one version of Liberty $5,10 & 20 with & without mottos etc. Those with bigger pockets can dip into the earlier gold like capped bust issues going back to 1795.

Whatever it is have fun image

PQGold - Welcome! I have also grown an appreciation for gold. I am collecting gold type, but I am going for the whole shooting match including the high reliefs and classics. Of course, I will need a 2-level promotion to Vice President to afford it, but I've got time on my side and I am patient. So far I have 6 pieces and plan to add the G$1 Type I Open and Closed Wreaths next.

    Marc,
The G$1 Type II is also included in the set. Drop the No Mottos and you are at 12. I think that's it.

yup, that works too..seems everyone has different definitions of 12 PC GOLD set , or US GOLD TYPE SET. The more pieces the more comprehensive, and of course more expensive.
