"BAD" gold

I thought with all the threads on fakes lately I would share pictures of my other bad coins. Although the 1849-O I think is real but not really worth much with the letter H scratched into it. mike image

                Great examples of counterfeits!

The first two are clear examples of how you can protect yourself if you just know what the design looks like. That Ms. Liberty is one hard looking woman with her lantern jaw, and the eagle on the reverse looks to be a little scrawy for the job. That coin looks to be die struck. The other two are cast copies.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
              • Mike,

Not all of us are as bold as you when it comes to buying raw gold on eBay, but at least if we someday make a foray into it, we can use these to help prevent us from getting ripped off. As I understand it, the 1882-S is the most commonly counterfeited Liberty double eagle, so that date alone makes me wary if the coin is raw.
              • The first one looks like Captain Pike after the engine room blew up. I about fell off my chair when I saw that. image

              • A good reason why I only buy gold in a PCGS/NGC/ANACS slab. Twowood
              • True twowood, but if you occasionally get the payoff like the CC Lib. eagle that Mike has now in an MS-62 slab for only $350 (I think that's what he said he paid), then you more than make up for the occasional bad apple!

The 82-S can be spotted as a fake from twenty feet but I still see people bid these up to hundreds of dollars. I got this one for six bucks and I paid very little for the $1 coins.
Jeff that 91cc was a very good deal but not the best deal in raw gold I have gotimage. mikeimage
