I'm thrilled with my new mint set

I bought an original mint set and was surprised that some coins were toned beyond my expectation. I can see why these coins tone, they are packed in cheap cardboard that is between a folded sheet of colored paper. The Philly mint coins were in the pinkish paper and came out nicely. The Denver mint coins in the cream colored paper didn't look as nice. Here are some scans of the best:

We are traveling this Holiday and probably won't be near a computer.

Have a great Holiday Season Everybody!

WOW! Those are absolutely awesome! The cents are incredible! And the purple frank is gorgeous! What are you going to do with them?
  • Those are great, Carl! Welcome to the wonderful world of mint sets from the 50's. If you have not already, check out the "Double Mint Sets" thread. I just posted a kind of out of focus picture of my original 57 set, that I am keeping in a plastic holder.
Those coins are truly beautiful. Great gift!

  • Oh my....

You MUST send them in to be slabbed image
  • Thanks for the nice comments!

The other thread on the mint sets was interesting.

I am collecting coins from 1956 so this is a major part of my '56 collection. I don't think the coins would grade very highly. I have no plans on selling. I wanted a set in original packaging so will just keep it as is.

I also have a slabbed proof set and an original proof set. Maybe I'll have to branch out into Canadian 1956 coins....

Too bad you're not collecting '57's like Clankeye. The '56 Canadian dollar in choice BU will cost you a bit more.

  • The penny is wild. I bet the quarter is more impressive in person.
I have a 58 brillant proof set that is really nice but no toning.
