Do you ever feel guilty about making coin purchases?

Like you have too much money tied up in coins already and should be putting the $$ elsewhere besides your Registry Set?---------BigE

No, my family has gotten used to eating macaroni and cheese 6 nights a week (hotdogs on Sundays), having to walk everywhere, and living in a tent.

BTW, what's this "Registry Set" thing of which you speak? Does it have anything to do with coins?

Registry does not apply to Darkside People, they are banished to a "Troll Island" type forum area. Thank you------BigE

Ah, so it's one of those liteside distractions from true numismatics. Thanks for explaining.

Yes, especially when I buy a gold coin like I did a few minutes ago. I have promised myself I won't buy anything else till I get my tax return unless I sell something first. Of course, I said that several times already this year. But *this* time it'll work!

  • Another "New Years Resolution" blown every time I buy! I'm addicted, but don't neccessarily want any 12 step program to help me recover.

  • YES!! every time i buy anything, even a 15 modern commem, i get buyer's remorse. Just think of the Heiress doing without something because i was weak. . . .

  • My wife still believes I'm finding these gold coins beside the road!
  • I used to, until my wife told me she has all the antique pottery from her 30+ year-old wedding pattern that she needs. In triplicate.

Now that I know she doesn't appreciate it any further, the 'Hobby' attracts all my spare change!

I got so used to buying only if the item was a bargain, I feel buyer's remorse whenever I pay 'bid' for a coin. Need those bargains to feel okay again.

A good snipe and a beer makes it all okay again. Sick, huh?

  • I don't feel guilty so much as "panicky." I'm usually certain that I am one closer look away from finding out my new purchase has every defect known to numismatics, sleeping gently under that wispy, soft, glowing patina.

Not at all. If I didn't spend money on coins, then I'd end up spending it on the family. Let them get jobs if they need clothes or food.

And you know what? You guys are such a bad influence! Before I found this forum I would average about $200 a year on coins. Now I spend LOTS more on them!
  • BigE, I usually get the guilts prior to buying. My wife and I have been retired for almost 6 yrs. and still have more liguidity(cash+IRA) than we did when we retired, but after 35 years of watching what you do and when you do it, it is still hard to spring for a coin that is saying "buy me" buy me". Bev, my mate and best friend just tells me; "spend whatever you want...but when I tell you I need money for the bills, get it". I still have problemsimage

  • I feel very guilty after a big purchase. I tend to rationalize it by thinking when I retire, I'll sell off some when I need money. I'm sure all my coins will go up in value. Right?image

Sometimes guilty, sometimes anxious, sometimes remorseful, but what the hell it is only paper money I'm spending.

if you ever start to feel guilty about coin purchases it is time to start to move on from coins and do something else with your time
as coins is only a relaxing hobby and if it is causing you stress or worry then it is not having its desired effects

and definately time to reexamine your life and priorities and try to apprecaite what you already have!

Good advice, Michael. I'll take the family out and splurge for hamburgers tonight instead of buying that gothic crown I've had my eye on. image

We have enough stress in our lives already. Why get stressed out over your hobby?

Hey, at least when you are purchasing coins you are increasing your assets. Some people buy stuff that will never have a chance at increasing in value.

When the kids were young, I did without buying coins, but I kept getting subscriptions. Last night my son called (he still lives here at home) to tell me he just passed his "last" final for his Associate Degree in Automotive Technology. I have paid my last college tuition bill, so NO I DON'T FEEL GUILTY!

I never make a coin purchase without discussing it with my wife, and I have a very realistic budget. I don't buy slabs nor do I pay for slabbing service....there's a lot of money saved up-front. No - I don't feel "guilty" about my purchases. They are all realistic and profitable in the end.

AT first I do, but then I come to my senses and realize that nobody really NEEDS to retire. image

Actually, I don't look at it as spending money. I consider it a "reallocation of my assets". Like fcloud alluded to, there are alot worse things I could be spending my money on! I don't smoke, drink only socially and then not very often, don't blow money on alot of the things my friends and coworkers do... fancy cars, cruises, sports wagering, eating out for lunch every single day of the week, trips to Las Vegas, etc. At least I have something to show for my efforts!
