New Member Has Washington Quarter Question

Hi all. New member here posting for the first time. I've been looking at the message boards for a couple of months now and it looks so fun and educational I want to be a part of this too. image I've learned a lot just reading these notes, including the whole ACG slab thing.

I live in Southern California and make most of my purchases at the Long Beach Coin Show. I collect US Type Coins, some modern world coins, and am looking to complete sets of Walking Halves, Buffalo Nickels, and Winged Liberty/Mercury Dimes.

My question on Washington Quarters is regarding the mint mark varieties on the 1964-D quarters. I was at a friend's house taking a look at the quarters his dad had put away and noticed that about half of the 64-D quarters had what appear to be repunched mint marks or possibly over mint marks. I haven't looked at them for a while, but I recall about four different varieties. If anyone could tell me more about them, or guide me to a source I would appreciate it.

    Woodwind,

Welcome to the forum! Can't help on your quarter question, but am curious in your choice of a screen name. Why woodwind? Do you play one? I play the saxophone and piano.
  • Welcome! I don't know how many different RPM'S there are for the 64D washingtons. The one every washington collector usually searches for is called the transistional reverse quarter using the reverse of 1965. Leaf above the top point on the arrows and leafs touching the first L and also the A in DOLLAR, Type C reverse. There was three different reverses used on the Washingtons.
    Hope this helps.
Fivaez/Stanton and also John Fienbaum has good books on em'.
    Welcome again, Daveimage
    Love those toned Washingtons
  • Welcome to the forums!

The best place to at least read about the Washington RPM's would be at CONECA.

    Good luck!

  • A book I have lists a micro double MM for the 1964-D and also high and low mintmarks.

    Welcome Wood

Got any proof 64 Kennedys? - Sorry, Russ I couldn't resist, plus I need one for my type set image

No answer here on the quarter question, but you will find many here that will help. This is by far one of the most informative groups around.

Good Luck and I hope to run into you @ Long Beach. They are also several other small shows in and around LA throughout the year. PM me if your interested and I can give you details.

  • Welcome to the boards Woodwind. I've noticed a lot of machine doubling on the 64D quarters that I've looked at, sometimes only effecting the mint mark. It would be odd to find that many RPMs unless they were from original rolls or a bag. Hopefully you've got the real thing, though. Good luck with the search!

  • Thanks all for making me feel welcome and for leading me to more information about the quarters. I will look into it and let you know if I find anything exceptional.

Geoman - I play soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxes (I have all of them) and clarinet. I play with several groups in the area and fill in with a few others every now and then. I have a flute at my disposal so I'm looking to learn that as well.

FrattLaw - Yes, as soon as I pay off my vacation to Las Vegas (I lost image ) I'll PM you for other shows in the area. Should be by late January. The trip didn't cost me that much.
