Typos/spelling errors - would you want to know?

I occasionally make spelling mistakes/typos here and I have evidence that I am not the only board member who does so.image Sometimes they just look sloppy, but other times, they can be pretty darned entertaining (I wont give the particulars here image).

My question is - if you are an "offender" would you like to be told? To further complicate the matter, if your answer was "yes" but you don't have your P.M. feature activated and can only be told publicly in a post, would you still want to know? Just curious. image

I don't point out typos that others make. They're just typos, after all.

On second thought, I guess if the typo was a date, it could be important - I might ask for a clarification in that case.

Sometimes we can only do our best. I know for myself I make typos.
I will go back and edit once in a while. But some of us are not used to typing all the time and maybe used to being on a construction site or something. But still collect coins. And communicate the best we can. JMO

It's really rude to correct somebody. This is a coin board not English101 board. Leave micheal alone. image
If I really cared what my post looked like I would c&p it to my Word Processor and run a spell check first.

michael doesn't make spelling mistakes or typos. His comments just happen to be "toned", that's all. I like them just the way they are.image
  • I don`t know. I geuss if it causes any misunderstanding I would like to know. If whatever typos/spelling errors I make causes somebody to snicker thats no big deal to me because this is a really good message board. I`m treated pretty well here, in spite of myself, and people here do respect each other very much.

If I`m having a hard time figuring out what somebody is trying to say, more often then not, somebody has already responded and I try to follow the responses to get the just of the topic. So typos don`t bother me. Now what to do about those darn fingerprints...........

If it is a really funny one, I'll point it out... for humor, not embarassment... one where I would laugh with everyone if it was me...

    Mark,
I know you are asking a serious question. A practical improvement would be to add a "spellcheck" to the message board.

For these relatively (I did write "relatively") unimportant messages, it is considered rude to point out typos and or spelling (except for humor, of course). image

On the other hand, when a board member puts his or her's auction in a message to discuss good and bad points, absolutely discuss spelling and/or typos.

Ok i,ll gripe about people that copy/cut/paste others messages and don`t put it in Italicized text
Atleast chose a different font to distinguish your post from others in your reply.

Cam40. How do you get the IText to work?
I do it by first highlighting the desired post,right-click it,copy. Then when repling and pasteing this text, chose the slanted I and right-click in the given field and now choose the paste option and whah lah. You,ve italicized your neighbors post within your own.

I wouldn't worry about it, though I think it good that everyone attempt proper grammar and spelling.

I wouldn't mind being told but would prefer it to be in a PM. Usually, I reread mine and fine an error or two which I then correct. I don't think it should be put in a post (for anyone) as that just makes for too much clutter.

To turn this into a semi-coin thread, I'll send a 1959-D Washington in an NGC MS 65 T holder (basically pure white despite the T) to anyone who correctly guesses what I believe to be the most common spelling mistake on the boards.

  • Mark,
I type fast with alot of errors that I try to go back and catch, also lots of coffee usually on board, so I know I let errors get through, a PM would be nice.

I'm so bad at it, I had to put a disclaimer in my signature. Most of the time I surf the Internet in the La-Z-Boy position with a mouse in one hand and a microphone and the other.
Need something designed and 3D printed?
  • Oddly enough, spelling errors don't bother me as much incorrect usage of the words:
    there, they're, their
    your, you're
    whose, who's
    to, two, too
But half the time I catch a mistake after I've posted it, I just leave it alone. Something about the edit button draws suspicion. image
  • I would like the software to tell me! My email software and Word tell me when I make spelling errors, so should this messaging software.
  • Mark,
Personally I would like to know, because I pride myself on my spelling and use of grammar. It doesn't really bother me to see spelling errors from other people though. As someone else pointed out, this is a coin board and not English 101. We all come from different walks of life, and for the most part, they're not secretarial.

P.S. To wayneherndon, is it when people spell "the" "teh"?
Edited to fix my mis-spelled word, how embarrassing! Thanks Petescorner and tjkillian!

Typos are one thing, about which I would not worry. Bad grammar on the other, I would prefer to know as I pride myself on my grammar. If people do not point it out, I might not learn from my mistakes.

"Your" instead of "you're" is the most frequent one per my unscientific survey. That's the one I was thinking of. I can't tell if Petescorner was placing a guess or not. If so, he is the first one with the correct answer. If not, Clankeye was first. Petescorner, now let me know if you were placing a guess (if so, PM me your address).

  • Spelling class was never one of my favorites image so i usually try to use words that I'm pretty sure I know how to spell right.

It's kind of a bummer when you post a thread and the only replies you get are about your spelling, so I would prefer to get a PM.

Wayne - I think another one thats right up there is the use of "to" instead of "too".

Sometimes they just look sloppy, but other times, they can be pretty darned entertaining (I wont give the particulars here image). May I vote for my favorite? When the board member called the other board member a "maroon" it had me rolling on the floor. With all the responses that thread generated I'm sure everyone knows the correct spelling now. You must have a thick skin to participate here and you learn much more than just about coins. I say if you feel like correcting someone do it.
  • May I vote for my favorite? When the board member called the other board member a "maroon" it had me rolling on the floor.

I thought they were being whimsical, kind of like how Bugs Bunny used to always say, "What a maroon!" I didn't know that was a mis-spelled "moron!" image

edited to correct spelling! So, I've become the second person to misspell a word in a spelling thread! LOL

You're in luck, mdwoods! - this "smarta$$", who is being "careful" about who he's "ragging on" says probably is spelled "probably" and not "probabaly".image

On another point (not as much fun, I'm afraid) - part of what I was getting at in my question, was misuse of certain words and not just typos. For instance, I once used "complement", by mistake instead of "compliment" (not even spell check would help me there!) and often see "effect" and "affect" (incorrectly) used interchangeably.

    Any flames?

  • Maybe this is a separate thread topic, but this thread has got me to wondering if it bothers people when they see a post has been edited. I can tell you because I am aghast when I see mistakes and misspelled words in my own posts, I edit quite a number of my posts. Does this practice bother anyone? And don't tell me to preview my post, still doesn't help.

Clankeye, it doesn't bother me when I see a post has been edited. Perhaps that's because I edit some of mine. image

The only time I can see it being a problem is if the editing somehow causes later replies to that message to become moot or seemingly senseless. Even then, I think the poster has that right.

This is another one of those threads that has many twists, turns and morphs - I like that and hope others do, as well.
