"OH MY" Part 2..Verdict is in.

Just received the coin from Mark.....(Link at bottom)

The coin is just beautiful.

The obverse is just incredible...the purple seems to have settled deep into the depressions on the face enhancing the overall features..unreal.

The reverse is actually better in person than in the photo...

While I thought that the purple on the obverse was just a hair darker in the photo than in person (splitting hairs, no way distracts from the overall appearance) the rest of the colors are dead on.

No tricks, scanner games or "software" enhancement on this one.

Kudos to Mark for sending it on approval. He didn't even ask me for a charge card #.

Based on the coin I saw vs. the photo..I would not heitate buying anything Mark offered based on a photo...

JMHO....

Glad you posted, I was thinking all along you wouldn't be disappointed, given the seller's reputation.
  • Never bought from him but good to hear he has a decent rep.....

Thank you for your prompt response and kind words. It was my pleasure to ship the coin for you and would certainly be willing to do so in the future.

  • Toast, I'm glad you like the coin. I said I had never seen one like the scan in person, but maybe some day I'll be lucky enough to view one like it up close.

Mike's sending it to you, was a good move on his part. Congratulations to both of you. image

    Mike and cointoast,

I must say, that was a great/smart way to put to rest, rumors regarding coingame's imaging. For purposes of this discussion, I will give cointoast the benefit of the doubt and presume he is not color blind. image

That coin literally makes me ache! Gads, what a beauty. Way to go on both ends!
  • Can I ask for a general idea of what you paid for it? (Of course you don't have to answer. image)
  • Masta Hanky.....After all this I'm sad to say I don't "own" the coin......I had a set price and I was willing to go $1800 dollars for it but I didn't meet the reserve...

While I believe in this market that the coin is worth what he's asking for it.....It's a "hair" more than I want to pay.

I also deal in antique persian rugs.....and if there's one thing I've learned is that the "deal of a lifetime" comes along about once a month.....

Though I'm not so sure with this Buff....Maybe I'll end up paying twice as much for it someday lol...

I have a set price I pay for coins and refuse to go over it.....But this Buff makes me want to rethink that... I'm sure that when it's sold I'll be rethinking it long and hard lol......

Cointoast's (CT) raves about Coingame's (CG) nickel makes me admit that perhaps CG's scans are closer to reality than I gave him credit for in my previous remarks. Yet, the whole situation here is very strange indeed. CT, knowing what CG wants for the coin, asks him to send it on approval. CG complies, and the coin meets CT's hopes. Yet, CT still won't meet CG's price, despite the bid being off by more than a hair from the offer. CT's explanation for not meeting the price doesn't ring true. Why go to the trouble of having the coin sent, if you would not buy it regardless of how it looks?

The true value of these monster toned coins is very fuzzy. In such cases, to return one like this simply because the seller won't relent on a small difference in price is simply not plausible. If this is really what happened, I would question CT's numismatic acumen. If otherwise, I would be left to wonder whether the coin really was up to expectations.

A couple of other things. Can anyone believe from the scan and CT's description that this coin grades only MS65? It looks to be a much higher grade to me, so what am I missing? Also, perhaps CG can now tell us his reaction to the inference drawn in an earlier thread that, shall we say politely, some friendly bidders were helping his auctions along. As far as I know, CG has never responded to those speculations.
  • gemtone65,

Just to set the record straight -- I did respond to the allegations of "shill" bidding, I just didn't do it on the open forum. I communicated with agentjim007 via several PM's and resolved the issue and he ended up buying a coin from me (which I'm sure that he will verify)!!! By the way, both bidders alleged to be shills (because their only feedback is from me) are still active. In fact, one of them just joined the forum today and would be more than willing to set the record straight. Moreover, another board member (who has done business with me in the past) just PM'd me expressing a serious interest in the now infamous toned 1925-P Buffalo nickel. Hopefully your satisfied now.

  • A quick question from one who does not buy toned. What would a blast white coin , same grade and holder go for? thanks

  • Gemstone. Good question and valid.

Mike is also a member of the boards and was privy to my original thead. He E-mailed me privately and asked if I would have a first hand look at the coin to dispel rumors of "scan enhachment" as I was also the high bidder on the coin. which I believe I did.

As a side note....to be honest with you I was hoping once I had the coin in hand that he would accept my offer..he didn't... but hey....that's life and I'm (almost) over it.

As far as the coin only being a "65"....I have to agree with you there...should be higher but then again I don't work for PCGS lol.....

As far as your comment "Also, perhaps CG can now tell us his reaction to the inference drawn in an earlier thread that, shall we say politely, some friendly bidders were helping his auctions along"

Really doesn't concern me....He knew what I was willing to bid on the coin. As far as the other bidder that ran it up (I think) 12 dollars more than me.....I checked his past auctions and found him to be a buyer and seller with coins in that price range so I really didn't think to much about it.

As far as I'm concerned Mike is a straight shooter....As far as any other opinions about him I suggest you read the comments above.

The lighting looks saturated in a blue /purple hue.Is this to enhance the colors on the coin?

  • If a board member has seen the coin and says it looks in every way as good as the scan, then I will take that to be true. And I will publicly apologize for inferring the color had probably been enhanced in the scan. As, I said later in the other thread, I will no longer draw conclusions about coins I do not have first hand knowledge of, or sellers that I have not had dealings with.

Apology graciously accepted and I would like to commend you for (obviously) being an individual of character. May you and your family have a blessed Holiday season.

  • Cointoast- I certainly respect your practice of setting a price and sticking to it. I know it is a practice I adhere to on most occasions. With that said, I sure hope you aren't being "pound foolish". That is a fantastic coin!

Clankeye- I sure respect your public apology and commitment to "no longer draw conclusions about coins I do not have first hand knowledge of, or sellers that I have not had dealings with." A growing, positive trend!

Gemtone65- If nothing else, you are relentless.
