"My friends who see my collection sometimes ask what something costs. I tell them and they are in awe at my stupidity." (Baccaruda, 12/03).I find it hard to believe that he (Trump) rushed to some hotel to meet girls of loose morals, although ours are undoubtedly the best in the world. (Putin 1/17) Gone but not forgotten. IGWT, Speedy, Bear, BigE, HokieFore, John Burns, Russ, TahoeDale, Dahlonega, Astrorat, Stewart Blay, Oldhoopster, Broadstruck, Ricko, Big Moose.

1) Several years ago at a Goldberg February auction, there were quite a few MS 65 & 66 RD IHC & many went for double the anticipated price for each coin.
2) This summmer, Superior had about 20 PCGS MS 66 Liberty Nickels and again, prices soared. However, when Heritage has one PCGS MS 66 Nickel in September, though it was a PQ coin, it sold for a non-descript, generic price.
3) Ditto this summer re Bowers and its seven PCGS MS 64 Capped Bust Quarters (I can't remember the last time when seven were offered at the same auction). Prices ranged from very high to obscene.
In these three cases, IMO you would have been able to get these coins more cheaply from a dealer rather than from the specific auction mentioned. Of course, in this particular case, while I think you could find type MS 65 & 6 RD IHCs from specific dealers, you won't find an 8.
Lakesamman, I think your OP points out there are people who will write a blank check for the finest coin known, based on the slab, irrespective of anything else. I don't have an opinion on this, as I am very liberal about most things which do not affect me personally.
"Seu cabra da peste,
"Sou Mangueira......."
The problem with those MS68's is that the type buyers will be joining the fray and will likely ace out the IHC folks. We'll see.
Now the 1899 is at 11,111 and the 1877 at 28,000......
The 1899 is a coin in dire need of a better image. I sense what sets it apart is its color and most especially its lustre. Hopefully Heritage will add digital pics to many of these lots. The owner of the Newmismatist IH proof collection insisted on digital images yet they haven't been added to his set yet (they were taken weeks ago).
Is it stock money? Doubt it. Most equity money has been lost and the average guy has his nestegg in IRA or 401k.
Stupid money is now chasing pop 1 moderns and low pop RDs. How high is high?
Given the state of coin scams, hype and registry mania I certainly would not be "investing" in coins today. However, there are plenty of series no pays attention to which maybe one day will be worth something. IN the mean time I will be buying them up in Orlando!
Fortunately for me, I consider the "centerpiece" of a IHC collection to be either the 1872 or the 1873 S1, not the 1877, so I won't get too carried away on this one.
1861 MS68 $14,000
1877 MS66R $44,000
1899 MS68R $11.500
1856 MS66 S3 $44,000
1858 MS67 $12,500
1856 P65 $12,500
1858 SL P65 $20,500
WOW...only about 17 days to bid.
Prices for many others will reach 5 figures before it's over (plus 15% comm.). The other 5 figure prices are the same today...see the above post.
