It's a little off topic, but I've noticed in the last few years that if an auction has a number of high profile high end type coins, these lots get bid up like there is no tomorrow. Examples:

    1) Several years ago at a Goldberg February auction, there were quite a few MS 65 & 66 RD IHC & many went for double the anticipated price for each coin.

    2) This summmer, Superior had about 20 PCGS MS 66 Liberty Nickels and again, prices soared. However, when Heritage has one PCGS MS 66 Nickel in September, though it was a PQ coin, it sold for a non-descript, generic price.

    3) Ditto this summer re Bowers and its seven PCGS MS 64 Capped Bust Quarters (I can't remember the last time when seven were offered at the same auction). Prices ranged from very high to obscene.

In these three cases, IMO you would have been able to get these coins more cheaply from a dealer rather than from the specific auction mentioned. Of course, in this particular case, while I think you could find type MS 65 & 6 RD IHCs from specific dealers, you won't find an 8.

Lakesamman, I think your OP points out there are people who will write a blank check for the finest coin known, based on the slab, irrespective of anything else. I don't have an opinion on this, as I am very liberal about most things which do not affect me personally.

    "Vou invadir o Nordeste,
    "Seu cabra da peste,
    "Sou Mangueira......."
  • The 1877 MS66RD IHC second finest example known [according to Richard Snow] after the Blay coin is at $20,500. Anyone want to take a guess on what the price realized will be? Over the 67K Stewart paid in 1997?

I've looked at the 77 and the 99 several times and will again at the show. Two thoughts, the 99 must look better in person, the Heritage picture doesn't flatter the coin. As far as the 77, my guess is that it will exceed the 67k price, $75K maybe as high as $80. Personally I like the 61 better than the 99.
  • Mike the 99 does look like it has a couple of small red spots on the obverse. I would guess that it is a function of the imaging. Whoever is bidding over 11K has surely seen the coin. Didn't Gorrell pay around 14.5K to buy the coin originally? The 99 was the favorite of Dr. Epstein and one thing is certain, he has a great eye for copper.

Given the number of coins, everyone should be able to come home with a trophy or 2. As for the 1877, it would be hard to top Stews bid for the "princess" knowing this one isn't as strong. But, one never knows. The folks that have gone to Dallas already are impressed with the collection(s).

The problem with those MS68's is that the type buyers will be joining the fray and will likely ace out the IHC folks. We'll see.

Now the 1899 is at 11,111 and the 1877 at 28,000......

Tim, I think there is a differnt buyer out there now, one who is more grade conscious rather than coin quality and combined with a surge in popularity for higher graded IHC's, I believe the price will exceed $67K.

    Maybe I'll change the by-line below to "I'm a strong seller of....."image

The 1877 is sure off to a fast start. It represents a rare opportunity for at least a couple collectors to cement the showcase slot in their set, and I think that alone will propell it past the Blay/Stacks price. The only other 66RD sold by Heritage went for 55K in 1999, so 75K for this one in this market seems right. There's a bunch of other rarities to take home as consolation prizes, so a bidding war between two collectors with their sites set on only one coin, pushing it over 100K, is less likely here. But you never know. The display of Stewart Blay's set at September Long Beach may have juiced some of these guys up.

The 1899 is a coin in dire need of a better image. I sense what sets it apart is its color and most especially its lustre. Hopefully Heritage will add digital pics to many of these lots. The owner of the Newmismatist IH proof collection insisted on digital images yet they haven't been added to his set yet (they were taken weeks ago).
  • Well now the 77 is almost 40K [with the BP] and we are still some twenty days away. The MS66 1856 FE is over 50K. The IHCs are going to go very high, even some of the semicommons MS65RDs are already at or close to pink sheet numbers. Won't be any steals here. I think Rick Snow will be adjusting his price guide up again soon.

  • If anything the current market is full of speculation, which we all know will end badly as it always does.

Is it stock money? Doubt it. Most equity money has been lost and the average guy has his nestegg in IRA or 401k.

Stupid money is now chasing pop 1 moderns and low pop RDs. How high is high?

Given the state of coin scams, hype and registry mania I certainly would not be "investing" in coins today. However, there are plenty of series no pays attention to which maybe one day will be worth something. IN the mean time I will be buying them up in Orlando!
  • Lakes, You were quick on that 77s new price. Are you one of the bidders? If you are - good luck. Its headed for the stratosphere. I hope to get a morsel or two if you heavy hitters are nice enough to leave something for us little guys .image

No, it wasn't me - just read your post and checked again. I'll be looking for the left-over morsals too.....image

Fortunately for me, I consider the "centerpiece" of a IHC collection to be either the 1872 or the 1873 S1, not the 1877, so I won't get too carried away on this one.

One more coin made it to the 5 figure level - a 1858/7 in MS64 now $11,000.

Prices for many others will reach 5 figures before it's over (plus 15% comm.). The other 5 figure prices are the same today...see the above post.
