Arrrghhhhh! Seller ending auction early ...

Don't you hate it? A seller is not smart enough to put a reserve on a coin or to know most of the action may come in the closing minutes/seconds and then they cancel the bids and end the auction because they do not like the price it is going for. Strikes me as disgenious. Don't sell it as a no reserve auction and then pull this trick. The seller's excuse? There was an error in the auction listing. Ok, bub ... it takes you six days and 22 hours to find the error, eh? Spare me, 1st team numismatics.

i think i had that bugger bookmarked on my watch list. it seems there were several early 50's cameo jeff's this week. some were the R&I coins in green holders that nodody wants cause they're overgraded, at least wrongly designated cameo, but there were others that looked nice. where was it bid when it was canceled? i'm trying to keep some semblance of a current price list. thanks.

My Auctions
Interesting and good things happen in phone conversations.
Maybe someone called your seller and had an interesting and good conversation, and then the seller ended the auction and sold the coin
to the good conversationalist. Maybe he didn't end the auction prematurely because he didn't like the way things were going.
Just a thought.....

i went over to eBay and it was the coin i was watching. no bids at $75 start tells me there were people willing to wait till the close for a snipe. that's a reason to use BIN, it at least forces one bidder to cancel the option and then others will bid for the coin.
while i was at my watch list i noticed this DCAM jefferson that was ended early by the seller. it would seem to fit into the context of Anaconda's scenario where the coin is sold outright. that date in DCAM just doesn't show up very often. watch for it in the registry soon!!!!!

I e-mailed the seller earlier today to say "Too bad you canceled, I was gonna bid." I guess canceling the auction is "fair," but the seller may not get top dollar by pulling this kind of thing. As for me, I refuse to be pressured into making a bid before I'm good and ready simply for fear that the seller may pull the auction when it sees no action early on. Hey, that's why there is an end date.
I've even seen auctions where the seller has said: "I won't let you win this item if it's with a snipe. Bid early if you want it." That's BS. I can understand where they are coming from, but rules are rules.
That '52 looked sweet. Wonder what it would have gone for, and what it did go for. OK -- which one of you guys picked up the horn to call tnfc?

That was the coin. And, there was action on it, although admittedly it was only at $80 when bids were cancelled, although seller had no idea of knowing what top bid was. I was prepared to come back with a decent bid, but poof .... And, insofar as closing out auctions when called and offered a set or better (at the moment) price, that is called fee evasion in eBay land and can get a seller kicked... People, that is why we have reserves -- to ensure we get the price we want for a coin without worrying whether it will go much cheaper than we want to sell. Spend a few cents and use it!

i think you make a good point about taking the good with the bad and as RGL said, use the reserve if you can't/don't want to risk a loss. i'll usually list with a reserve first time around and if a coin doesn't sell it'll start at a dollar with no reserve if i choose to relist.
all the action with jefferson's is a mixed blessing. downside is that we'll pay more and have to fight it out for the choice coins!!!!!!! on the upside, and i insist on being an optimist, more coins should show up as collectors see $$$$$$$ waiting to be made. somewhere in there is the "middle ground" that i seek------a solid coin at a reasonable price.
bring 'em on!!!!!

all my bids are snipes...it's the only way to go on ebay,in my opinion...shills aren't a problem...i decide the most i'll go and try to use a little cleverness with the dollar number in my snipe attempt...

Ending an auction that has been active for 5 or more days within two minutes of the auction close is evidence enough for me to convict him of cheating.
<< <i>I recently began listing some of our inventory items and I put a reserve on every one of them. I have had to cancel a few because they were ordered through regular channels while the auction is running. If reserve has been met then that auction will not get cancelled no matter what and the website client will be told the item is not available, but if not then I am obligated to pull the auction. I will not accept offers to end it early however, reserve met or not. And I certainly won't end a no reserve auction because I'm not happy with the results. I use no reserves too and am willing to take the good with the bad. >>
This is a good policy. You should post your eBay ID here so we can check for your auctions.
People who end no reserve auctions early to sell to someone who made an offer are questionable sellers at best and scumbags/frauds at worst.
