Ebay sellers, how long do you wait for your money???

I just had an auction that ended 12/1/02. No response to first invoice. Sent a reminder 12/4/02,response is that a lot of people are ahead of me to get their money.I replied that I would wait ,but let me know something in a few days. No response. I emailed again on 12/8/02 to let me know by 12/9/02 or would have to relist. 12/9/02 I get a response that he doesn't have amount or address. It's the 16th now,no money and while all the waiting is going on he's no longer a registered user !!!

  • Dukie, if he's no longer a registered user, then I think your deal is over. And I wouldn't send him the item unless I got cash as payment at this point. It's too easy to charge back a credit card or stop payment on a check and you'll have no recourse. Just re-list and try to get you final value fees back.
  • I ALWAYS wait at least 5 days - you have waited plenty long enough....re-list
  • I pay for my auctions with paypal within the day usually. I'd consider 14 days total plenty of time to get your lazy butt to get a MO and for mail service. Sounds more than fair to me. Of course if they are nice with emails and explain a problem I'd wait. But sounds like it's time to relist for you. image

  • Make sure to let e-bay know. This way they will send out a payment notice for you and they are aware of a problem. You do not want them to charge you for something you did not sell.
  • I spoke with the head of my local Post office about regular mailing time.He stated that the rule of thumb is"for every 300 miles = 1 day delivery time".Most of the time I use this as a factor when I mail a payment out.If I have to mail a payment to Fla. which is about 2800 miles from my home,I will wait 10 to 12 days before I e-mail the party. Many times the seller will let me know when he/she received payment.Generally speaking it's within the Post Office time frame.

Dukie101 if I don't have $$ in hand after 2 weeks I contact the buyer again asking if they mailed it yet.
I think you don't need to worry about all that and just call your deal over.

Man, you guys are patient! Be sure to put in your ad that payment is expected in ( ) days. It makes it easier in the long run to have expectations layed out. The super-slow payers will avoid your ads.....so much the better.

  • Ask Dog 97, I usually wait atleast 3 minutes before I pay for my auctions. As far as selling, I list my auctions with a 10 day after end of auction deadline for payment, with a 3 day after end of auction for communication exchange.

If the 10 day period falls on a weekend (Sunday) I wait till Monday, then I send one more Email, wait a day and then send out a Non-paying bidder notice. I have never had a problem, save for 2 deadbeats and they are now "non registered users....LOL

  • I sold an coin on 12-12-02 and still no email from buyer despite four emails. How long do I have to wait to relist my item on ebay. Does ebay demand a certain time for the buyer to answer? Funny thing the buyer has over 100 positives and only one negative. I don't want to negative someone if there truly is a problem. Any advice?

    Thanks

  • Today is only the 16th, and you sent him 4 emails? Yikes man! Maybe the guy has a life and will get with you tonight.

It works both ways. I sent a money order out for a coin Nov 25, and still no coin. I called the seller Dec 13, and he said he would sent it out on the Dec 14. It really fries me that people who demand money orders hold the coin for three weeks! Like I said, "it works both ways."

  • Bulldog, it's five days since the auction ended! Isn't that unusual, no contact? I always contact ASAP or at the latest the next day. How do you "not know" you bid on something that cost $1000.00? The reason I ask is that this has not happened to me before. Thanks

  • Ogden,

Send the dude one more Email, detailing your concern. I think that EBAY makes you wait 10 days to the minute, before you can use the safe Harbour avenues. Good Luck to you and I hope that you complete the sale.

Don'thesitate for a minute to NEG the buyer if the sale goes sour. It is not fair to you the buyer. Even more so if you had multiple bids.

  • Thanks Bulldog, I have had buyers email me to ask if I would wait for payment and I have always said "Yes". The important thing is to at least acknowledge that you won the auction and let the seller know your'e alive. I can wait. Incidentally, there were multiple bidders.

    Thanks for the advice.

  • I like to use pay pal from my checking acct. that way I dont have to worry about getting a m/o or sending a check by snail mail, but thats just the way I like to do it
  • Hi Dukie,

Been there, had that done before. If it was a gold coin you sold, you will likely get a check when gold moves higher with an excuse note. I'm sorry if you got stiffed but look at the brighter side. Some coins are too nice for some people and anyone that makes 30 days worth of excuses to acquire a nice coin is an automatic out for that coin. Save that coin and sell it to someone who will deserve it and appreciate it. I like coins so run it by me and let me get a whack at it. I took a 7 week break from Ebay and missed it. Please send me a photo and I will park that coin with someone who likes good coins......like me.

  • Dump the looser. E-Bay says contact within 3 days, BUT..... does not have a rule for timely payment/settlement.

Many sellers explicitly state payment must be received by XXX or item will be relisted and negative feedback left. My one and only sour E-Bay transaction was with a jerk who never responded to my e-mails for over a week. I then asked again politely for an update on his situation or I would be forced relist the item and leave appropriate feedback. This jerk went ballistic on me. I finally told him that because of his rotten attitude and stalling that the deal was OFF, and I left him a neutral, and he left me a flaming negative which was NOT deserved. It escallated into a big blame and shouting match via e-bay reporting services, and I evenutally had him repremanded and the negative removed (Yes it can be done...). It was a good lesson on why to hold on to ALL correspondence until the transaction is done and feedbacks are left. Ever since then I ALWAYS state in the auction that payment must be received within 10 days of auctions close or the sale is cancelled, and the item will be relisted. This jerk kept claiming that he sent payment, and sent me repeated e-mails. I never did received any payment, and only after my very polite warning e-mail did I ever hear a peep from this guy.

If he was having difficulty all he had to do was e-mail and say he would be late, and I would have been fine with that. I am not a mind reader.

E-Mail and politely inform them that the item will be re-listed, and if any payment is received it will be returned in full. Re-list the item, and block that bidder.
  • Dukie,
I usually give them two weeks. That is plenty of time to send payment. I also send them emails for reminders. I try to work with the buyer. So far I have never had a problem (knock on wood).

  • He's history. Poor communications on his part.I do this for fun,and it is sad, that this happens from time to time. For the most part,I've not had many bad situations like this----but it just irks me that people will bid with no intentions of paying,or they overload their wagon.I agree with one of the post on here, that he doesn't deserve the coin--so there---enough said.image
