Is this a bad time to list coins on ebay? Please read!

I need to clear out some inventory (to free up some much needed cash), as my wife and I have decided to move, and I have poured about 15k in the new house with options and upgrades and such.

Anyway, I put up about 15 or 20 cool coins on the registry and bst coin forum, with what I thought were good prices, and I have yet to have one inquiry or sale...so I thought maybe this just isn't the right place. So, I thought, I better give ol' ebay a whirl, but thought...uh oh, maybe this is just not the right time of the year to try and sell anything at all. I hate to put the time into listing as well as a few hundred dollars into fees and have it blow up in my face.

So I pose this question to you the buying and also selling parties...is just before Christmas a bad time to try and sell coins?

I think it is. I've tried selling a few things and they all went super cheap.

Three straight years of selling on eBay without a week's break, and records showed Sept.-Nov. to be the best time of the year to sell, evenly tied with Feb.-Mar.

The worst time to sell was July-August.

December and January were slighthy above April-June, but all were more or less "average".

Of course there could be differences both in the fact that I'm talking about 1999-2001 and that I sold unslabbed, inexpensive items. But that's what my experience showed. I started in January 1999, and I have not sold on eBay since Oct 2001 because of a lack of time due to attending college. I will return to selling when I graduate.

  • July is the worst - not December.

My experience has been that a lot of people spend a lot more time online in the early winter months - and so E-bay sales aren't too bad in Dec. and Jan.

Everyone is on vacation in July.

I have auctions up right now and they are doing just fine. I also just sold a seated Liberty dollar for a pretty nice sum. I am planning on putting up an 1891s MS-64 DMPL Morgan in the next day or so and offering FEDEX shipment so it can be delivered by Christmas.
  • Some of my best sales have been in December. I laways figured the biggest reason was less competition. Most people quit listing over the holidays. That makes your stuff all that much easier to find.
Seriously, December has been good for me in the past, but it is a new world out there this year, so who knows??

This is a great time to be selling on Ebay. July to Oct were weak in sales for me on Ebay, but things are now selling.

  • Thank you for all the responses, anymore would be appreciated. I think what I am going to do, is put together a list of my inventory, and put it up here for a day or two, and then whatever doesn't sell go back to ebay.

  • Mnmcoin! I think it depends on the coin. I have been disappointed in what my auctions have brought?
In fact I lowered my reserve several times, in my opinion below their real value. Good luck!
