1835 Capped Bust Quarter

Thanks to the recommendations of David Lawrence by people on this forum, I went ahead with the purchase. Win Callendar told me he'd rate it a 7 or 8 on a 1 to 10 scale for the grade (which is the quality of coin I like); a better than average but not PQ coin. He said its luster is quite good.

Fortunately, I have a 10 day window re the approval of the coin & the credit card does not get paid until the end of January.

    That's a nice coin, Elcontador!

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Will said that there's a thin contact mark to the right of Miss Liberty's head (which does not show up in the image) which keeps the coin in its current holder. I appreciate that kind of candor combined with the 10 day return privilege.

I've been looking at 4s for the last year & haven't found a really nice for the grade coin yet. Should get it next week.

Well, I won't be buying anything else for awhile... The last time you said that you blew me away with your Classic Half Cent, MS65RB -- hope this Bust Quarter lives up to that one Jeff.

Thanks for all of your great responses, but I want to give a little something back. If you didn't tell me that David Lawrence was one of the
"good guys," even with their 10 day no questions asked return policy, I still would not have bought the coin. This is one of the great features of this forum.

This is a sizeable chunk of change for me and I'm going to have to stretch to pay for it, but I've been looking for a nice 4 for a good year and up to this point, have not found one.

Big E - I try to buy nice coins for the grade so I don't have to / or am
not tempted to submit them. Win said this was a solid, very nice 4 but not a PQ coin. If it was PQ, they would have priced it higher than they did. However, to the extent grading standards have changed re a particular coin I own, I may have to make an exception to this.

Paul - I picked up that 1/2 Cent at just under Greysheet bid at an auction. I still don't understand how I got it so cheaply and without much competition. Will we get you out here for the next Long Beach Show?
Apparently I just missed you in September by maybe 15 minutes.

Hard to tell from the pic, but the one you linked looks much much better than the lots from B&M sale this summer.

Okay, I got the coin, took it home, turned off all of the lights except for the halogen lamp in the
study & looked at it with a magnifying glass.

Thank you David Lawrence. This is the first honest 4 I've seen.
    1) The strike is excellent
    2) The surfaces are original and it has very few marks for the grade. Miss Liberty's face and
    neck are surprisingly clean.
    3) There is cartwheel luster, but it's a bit subdued -- this is how an Unc. silver coin over 100 years old is supposed to look. I have a Seated $ in 3 that looks a bit like this.
    4) It has an interesting die crack above the eagle to near the right rim (reverse).
    5) Why it didn't make a 5
    a) There's a thin scratch between stars 10 and 12. It's not deep and it doesn't jump out at
    you.
    b) There is a short, deeper scratch between the eagle's right wing and it head.
    c) My gut feeling is that in a 5 holder, one or the other may be allowed, but not both.

Can some attribute the variety? The date has a high 3, so I'm assuming it's a Browning 1, 2 or 3.
According to Breen, Browning 3 has small dentils on the reverse & more die cracks (I think this is
correct, I don't have his book available right now).

I'm getting to learn how difficult it is to get a totally pleasing coin.

The subdued luster probably has just as much to do with keeping it out of a 65 holder as the scratches. 64's provide a lot of value - glad you like the coin! image

  • Great Coin - congratulations
