Newby Needs Help

I've read all the legal stuff a couple of times.
As close as I can tell from the compass, I'm facing West toward Newport Beach.
My jar of dip is open and the fumes are evident in the room.
The lights are out and humming the song, "It Had To BU".
What next?

    Welcome aboard! Got proof JFKs?

    Russ, NCNE
  • Thanks for responding.
I was one of the fortunate few who bought gallon jugs of Jewel Luster before they stopped selling it. Others may disagree, but I get the best results with the 1983 vintage.

Your Morgan is on the way. I sent it along with the check.
    Best,
    Tom
  • Thanks for the response.
I've got to remember to put the cap back on the acetone bottle.
I'd love to see Cheech and Chong do a movie about the coin business.
    Best,
    Tom
  • Thanks for the response.
Anyone can have a code of ethics, but a official forum song would be special. Maybe Three Coins in a Fountain would be a better choice?
I'll suggest Pennies From Heaven and then never bring up the topic again.
    Best,
    Tom
  • Well since you asked Skoal Bandit.
    Thanks for the response.

  • Thanks for the response although I'm not real sure how to take it. I've heard lots of strange things about this site.

It really has nothing to do with this topic, but I knew a girl in high school named Tempus Fugit. I guess it just goes to show that Cyberspace is really a small world.
    Best,
    Tom
  • Thanks for the response and welcome.
Nothing special in proofs but I do have a few SMS66 and 67 Cams.
There is one 1969-S PR-67 DCam that is the best I've ever seen--but I think I'll keep it for my collection.
    Just kidding.
    Best,
    Tom

That wasn't really her name so much as her internal clock wasn't it?

  • Lee,
If you leave a couple of air holes I can be as corrigiable as the next guy. Just don't ship me to Newport Beach!

    Is this "the" Tom Becker?

    Russ, NCNE
  • We went to the drive-in movie once.
My folks said I had to be home by midnight so I never got around to asking about her internal clock.
    Thanks for getting back.
It's probably time to do something serious.

It's usually best not to ask a date about her internal clock, as it can
easily be misunderstood. Her parents must have had quite a sense
of humor since it mens "time flies" in Latin. What sorts of collections
are you serious about? Or at least, which are you having serious fun
    with?
    Tempus fugit.
  • Well--unless you are with the IRS I would say this is the Tom Becker who has been a dealer since 1968.
I'm sure other Tom Beckers would say they are also "the" TB.
  • Maybe her name was Temptress. It's been a long time.
What I'm most serious about is consumer related issues that apply to the coin business.
In print and on my web site I try to provide facts and opinions that will assist collectors at all levels to enjoy the hobby.
I simply won't buy the notion that one has to pay their dues to become a coin collector.
Being a greedy dealer, I figure that every time a disgusted collector leaves the hobby I've lost a potential customer.

    Sorry for the long response.

    Hey, it's Tom Becker! Welcome!

I've read every article on your site and it's the only site I've ever paid money to subscribe to. Your articles are very thoughtful and I've plugged your site here more than once. Nice to have you here.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

http://www.tombeckeronline.com In case somebody wants the link. Good stuff there.

BTW, Tom, I grabbed a couple old holder (before CAM/DCAM designation) PCGS proof Kennedys from you on eBay a while back. They have now been freed from that old plastic, and will soon be residing in properly designated new plastic.

  • Why thank you so much. Your kind comments are greatly appreciated.
This site seems like a wonderful venue. I've only been on a few days and already I've met some very nice people. Imagine how different the hobby and business would be now if we'd had this resource 30 years ago?
    Best regards,
    Tom
  • Russ,
They can say what they want.
There is no holder as good as an old holder.
I'm glad you were pleased. Just remember, the best customer is a repeat customer.
    Best,
    Tom
  • And too much sugar coated nonsense. Coin collectors are intelligent people, but everyone can benefit from a little guidance and sincere suggestions. I've only spent a few minutes on this site and already I'm impressed with the willingness of members to share their knowledge and experience.
    Best,
    Tom
  • Thanks for the kind comments.
I hope to be posting some new material during the next month. We will be taking advantage of affordable technology to create a series of illustrated teaching programs and illustrated articles.
The Internet now allows me to do some things I could never afford to publish in print.
    Best,
    Tom
  • Wow. First time I've accidently posted to a thread in all the time I've been here.

Well... since I'm here I better say something...

"Coin collectors are intelligent people" In a single sentence he:

    1. Admits we are people

    And...

    2. Goes out on a limb and says we are intelligent.

I like him. I like him a lot.

That might protect you from getting run over by the wagon, but you may
still end up a jester, knave or worse.

Watch for his stories on Monday or as the muse pays her visits.
    Tempus fugit.
  • Please excuse the tardy response.
To be serious for a bit, it does seem that coin collectors enjoy more of every day. It's nice to have a hobby so you don't end up living only to work. Some of the most interesting people I've ever met happened to collect coins. Just so you don't think I've led a sheltered life, I've been a professional hockey player, fiction writer, and motorcycle dealer.

Thanks again for the response. This is a fun site.

A response in Latin would be fine.
