Critiquing a scan of a 1860-S $3 toned gold (repost)

I posted this earlier and received a wide range of responses. Thanks to all and more are welcome. I won't receive the coin until next week but have to decide whether to keep it. It received many bids, including RGI Paul from Massachusetts who sells a lot of decent coins with no reserve. I barely won the thing.

Barney

Hello all,

I successfully won a 1860-S NGC XF-45 $3 piece from an eBay seller with an outstanding record.
There was no minimum, no reserve-a pure auction. I checked "coinfacts.com" to see how this coin had
fared in previous auctions. Two were sold in 2000: a PCGS XF-40 and an undesignated XF-40 (I bid $1650 and the other coins sold for $3400 and $4200-information courtesy coinfacts.com). Have scarce $3's gone super soft in the market? I don't really care; I needed a $3 for my type set and this coin had color, scarcity, and was a civil war-era gold piece as well. I have not yet received the coin-sent the check last week.

Here's the URL:http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=527&item=803331362&rd=1

If you were the dealer, how would you handle this? I have not heard from the company-only received their automatic response.

Thanks,
Barney

  • I would give 'em a call. they are probably doing the old "wait on the check to clear" thing. Pretty coin by the way image

Bid is $1150 in XF and $4400 in AU.

I'd give them a little more time. By the looks of their feedback (ie: comparing the auction end dates vs the bidder's feedback dates) they seem to have a pattern of shipping around a week to 2 weeks after the auction ends. Their feedback rating is strong (1124 pos vs 0 negs) so I suspect they won't dupe you.
  • Loki,

I'm not at all concerned about their record. I was just curious about the bids that other XF '60-S $3's
had received. I look forward to seeing the coin-whenever it arrives.

    Thanks for the reply,
    Barney

That's one heck of a nice 3$ gold, but it also is what it is: an XF45. I don't see AU out of that one.

  • I agree with you, Braddick. I was just perplexed as to why XF-40's were fetching $3-$4K. One was even cleaned! It must depend upon where the coin is being sold, its pedigree, etc. Mine's just an eBay purchase. Who cares where it came from?

I'm happy with this one and glad you like it too.

My isp is messing up can't get eBay to load.
Nevermind it's ngc, good buy image
  • Maybe I need to brush up on 3 dollar golds but one reason why it may not have brought as much is the actual grade. It is a nice looking coin and I like the color but I wouldn't grade that even as a 40 coin. I feel much more comfortable at the 35 level. The wreath appears to be fairly heavily worn as does the eyebrow area, the cheek, all the hair waves and the tops of the feathers. Possibly a lot of the flatness is from strike, as I say I don't know $3 gold, but I would have to see it in person before I would grade it higher.

    Stupid me again,

Starting at a buck with no reserve; if the bid reached only $50, do you think the bidder would receive this coin?

Yeah right! When sellers say stupid things like this I don't bid.

hi there barney!!!!!! i tend to agree with conder101 for me this coin is not xf but a nice vf coin
but again i need to see this coin IN PERSON SIGHT SEEN!! to make a true evaulation but just from the scan this coin is totally maxed out it in its respective holder!!!!!
for a true xf 45 even if poorly struck coin it needs to have reasonable lustre this coin apperas to have none!
and for me it really doesnot matter as you have a full ten day return priviledge

also as to the other so called coins in other sales since i do not know the real facts nor have seen the coin sight seen i cant comment

barney this coin is basically super rare in au and if this coin was a really nice xf 45 coin with lustre in protected areas with exceptional eye appeal i would be happy to pay 3000 for the coin easy EASY

    sincerely michael
  • Well, I'll just have to see when it gets here. I'm happy to have a scarce date like this in a nice circulated
condition. I see that it's maxed out on its grade, which is why few people bid on it. It is interesting to note that cleaned XF '60-S $3's went for higher bids than this one. I was just curious. Thanks to all who chimed in with a comment. I'll let you know how it looks when I get it.

    hi there barney!

if you buy this coin do not crack it out of its respective holder

as if you do and send it to pcgs you will get a med vf grade and then you got what the coin is really worth in my opinion around 1000 on top of one ugly yuk yuk coin to boot

again my opinion based solely on the scan

    Hi Barney,
I agree with Conder and Michael on this one. I think it got a really kind shake on its grade.
I personally am not too enamoured by the coin but I am not a $3 gold collector and therefore do not have the appreciation for a needed date that you may have.

astounding coin, and you got it CHEAP. DO NOT grade that coin just off the image - a frequently weakly-struck date, must be graded by surface quality, including % of luster remaining. i contend the coin will look significantly better in person, & imo remarkable toning.

seriously, if you decide you do not want, please let me know!
