I am going to the video store today to rent the movie "The Jerk" (no irony intended, of course, with respect to the title of this thread, the author of this thread or the thread itself), i haven't seen the movie in many many years but i seem to remember that Steve Martin refers to a part of his anatomy as his "special purpose" during the course of the movie.
May i humbly suggest that dirty coins are covered with "just plain old dirt" and spectacularly toned, beautiful, ultra-desirable (for some) wonder coins are covered with "special dirt."

As a chemist and soil scientist... my two cents:
Toning: surface corrosion, oxidation or sulfidation of the matrix metal.
Corrosion: oxidation or sulfidation of the matrix metal to a point where damage is done to the design.
Dirt: soil out of palce (also any foreign substance).
