......looking at lines 3 and 7 it appears i'm not the only one who has trouble with strike and rub on those two series. it'll be a while for me till i submit a franklin again, though i feel a bit better about the quarters. nice results overall.

Ah yes, the phantom au/58 grade on that nickel. That is the EXACT reason why I don't submit to pcgs anymore. They do that ALL the time. In my experience anyway. I couldn't take it anymore. image

  • Interesting bunch of coins image How do you think they came out compared to what you expected? Sure looks like they took a LONG time to get them done.

Considering the value of the 1882 dropped about $100 I am not that happy.

That's the catch Placid. You HAVE to submit that coin again. They killed me with that kind of thing. Don't worry, it'll come back Mint State the second time through, or that's how it worked for me. Terrible game, isn't it? image

  • On lines 3 and 7, were they really that bad when you sent them in? Also Those Ikes are really tough to get up to dcam aren't they? I have been disappointed several times on those.
  • A very revealing story.

I am not very good with washington quarters. Those were in albums that my wifes grandfather left her. I looked at them all and those two looked the best to me so I sent them in to see what they would grade. They cartwheel and are bright.
At least I know not to bother sending any of the others in.

They might have a rub I can't tell.

    Placid,

You want all of the feathers to be bold on the eagle's breast on the reverse of the
Washington Qtrs., or you have a circ. coin. Forget the details re the high points of the
obverse. Tom B can help on this.

The example with your nickel is why I don't crack anything out. Ever. I rarely submit, but
I did get an in holder upgrade which added $700 to the value of the coin.

Before doing this, I suggest lining up your coin with a number of similar coins in the same
grade of the same series, and see how yours compares. There is typically a pattern
re grading a specific coin of a specific series in a stated grade.

If you can, then get some coins of the same series in the next grade up and do the same.
Get a knowledgeable friend to review the coins also. If you both agree that yours is nicer
than the same graded coins and as nice as some of the next grade, then send it in
    for an in holder upgrade.

While this isn't possible for early 19th Century type coins, you should have no problems
doing this with Walkers and Morgans (which IMO are among the easiest series to grade
in Unc ). While you can do this with SLQs, I think the grading is more arbitrary with this
    series than the others.

This isn't foolproof - I had a 65 FH SLQ not go because of toning - when a dealer and I
both thought the coin would make a 6. However, I think this is better than a "what the
hell, let's go for it," submission.

Placid, I really can't comment on the modern stuff as I don't really know much about them but I can see you had a rough go of it with the older coins image. I feel for you on the 1882 nickel as I have seen several coins jump from a 58 to a 63 but as others have stated that just part of the coin game. Mike

PCGS must not be in the holiday spiritimage. I have a bunch in now, so I can see what I have to look forward to.

I've actually been snapping up quite a few AU58s in the new slab (with the barcode on the front). EVERYBODY is complaining that they're handing them out a lot more often than they should be, so I figure I'll grab a few of them while I can, and then resubmit them when they loosen up.

And if they don't ever loosen up, at least I have some nice looking coins for cheap money!

Masta Hanky, I am not letting go of my AU-58 (very light drawer rub) California half ... and, I am Franklin challenged myself. I have a nice grading set ranging from PR 63, 64, 65, 66 and 67. And, I can't tell a lick of difference, on the whole, between the 66s and 67s (and apparently, from a couple of results, 63s)!
  • Have ursabear send in that nickel for a MS69!

i REALLY wish more of you submitters would harass pcgs & ask them why they don't guarantee against UNDER-grading of coins!

I believe that most people that send in coins for regrade are sending in coins that they have purchased in the PCGS holder. In other words, they did not pay the original grading fee. If they want to send liner coins in thru regrade service in hopes of getting some upgrades and reaping the financial rewards of the upgrades, then they aren't really paying for a mistake we made on a coin they had already paid a fee on. In addition, we do essentially the same work on a coin that upgrades thru regrade service as one that doesn't. We perform the service and pay our people to do the service. We need to get paid for performing the service. - David Hall

Re Greg's quote (or paraphrasing) of Mr. Hall -- I can't speak for most people, but my coin which upgraded was originally sent in raw by yours truly. I paid one grading fee when it came back in a 5 holder & another one when it came back in a 6 holder. Does that mean that I'm entitled to a refund since I paid the grading fee twice for the coin to get in its proper holder?
