A National Bank Note for Franklin Lovers

I thought it was interesting that we have many favorite vices present....slothfullness, alcohol and a partially naked woman.

Yes, yes, I know, Franklin wasn't screwing around, he was fishing for electricity. So, trivia question: how many times did lightning hit Franklin's kite?

    It hit the key image
  • That's some pretty money, and a nice motif. Is there some law that says our current notes must be ugly? image

Who's the kid sitting next to Franklin with the bottle of moonshine?

I thought the Franklin story was a myth? Kind of like George Washington's cutting down a cherry tree with an ax.

  • Since he was rendered unconcious, he doesn't know how many times it got hit by lightning.

There is no direct evidence that lightning hit his kite even once. But more interesting is the fact that it didn't have to, in order for him to collect static electricity in a primative capacitor called a Leyden Jar (that's not an alcohol bottle in the picture)connected to the key. All he needed was an approching storm or atmospheric disturbance.

  • If all he was looking for was static electricity why didn't he just rub a balloon on his head?

I don't think balloons were invented yet.
Party favors were all the rage though.

Looking for Nationals, Large VF to AU type, 1928 Gold, and WWII Emergency notes. Also a few nice Buffalo Nickels and Morgan Dollars.

  • Beautiful note! I know zippo about currency but have often been tempted to collect a few as the notes of the past are so beautiful.

Question: How did notes of over a 100yrs ago manage to stay so pristine? I mean without even a fold/crease? Even near new notes today have at least a tiny crease somewhere. Notes are not as durable as coins so I would think damage would occur more easily.
  • It's a mystery!

Seriously, probably the same way as gem coins... some wacky collector crazy enough to carefully protect it rather than spend it like a sane person.

zero. a passing storm cloud - not a lightning bolt - negatively charged the kite, string and key.

  • Don`t know, don`t care. But what a gorgeous note. I have a few notes. A couple of gem 2 dollar bills and a couple of nice blue and gold certs. I find them every bit as collectable as coins

I wonder what folks thought about in winter when they touched something and got a shock in those days?
