eBay down. What happens to the Auctions getting ready to close?

braddickbraddick Posts: 23,975 ✭✭✭✭✭
Are the snipers out of luck when eBay goes down? There was an auction I was watching just now, eBay's down, but when I go to refresh and eBay's back up, the auction was CLOSED.

I would think eBay would 'freeze' all pending auctions and pick up where they left off once they're back up and running.
I'm sure that could be programmed in and would be more fair to all (including eBay with higher closing bids!).

Do you agree?

Buyers and Sellers are SOL. I am quite sure that Ebay has covered there *ss with the fine print.

I do agree that ebay could and should do something about these situations.
  • If they are down for over two hours all auctions that closed during that period are extended another 24 hours. If they are down LESS than two hours,on auctions that close during the outage the snipers are out of luck, the bidders who had put a token bid on them to put them on their watch lists reap a windfall, and the sellers get shafted.

That's not fair. eBay, knowing the nature of how auctions work with buyers should extend ALL auctions that close during an outage.
That would be the right thing to do.

eBay says that their system is so big that it would require many hours to update all the auctions for another few hours.

Sellers can list in their auction that due to an outage they reserve the right to cancel the auction (even if it ended during the outage).
