ICG came through

Most of you know I'm building my Mercury set in ICG holders, because I like the holder. I see posts which flame ICG for all the 70's they gave/give out. I have never received a 70 myself from the coins I have sent them, but then I don't send moderns to ICG. I sent a PanPac Commem to ICG which was a solid 64 and they graded it 63. No brainer-I cracked the coin, sent it to PCGS and...yes it came back 64. From my experience and in my opinion ICG grades comparable to PCGS and a little tougher than NGC.

Several weeks ago, I made a sight unseen trade which included an MS65 ICG Morgan. The guy told me how nice it was, yada, yada, yada and I bit, hook, line and sinker! The coin arrived and it was a 64 in a 65 holder! To put it mildly, I was slightly UPSET. Having talked to James Taylor in person and on the phone many times, I sent him an e-mail about this coin being overgraded and I thought ICG should buy the coin and get it out of the 65 holder. He asked me to send the coin to ICG for review, which I did. Today, I received a call from James in which he apologized for the coin, said it was regraded 64 and offered me the difference between Greysheet 64 and 65 ($93.) and the coin. This pleases me to know they stand behind their grading.

Anybody who buys a coin, from any of the major services and feels it is overgraded, should contact the service and let them know. So far, I haven't sent anything back to PCGS, only to NGC and ICG. The NGC story didn't turn out as happy and I lost money.

I don't see any reason why anyone would flame you on this thread. Thanks for relating your experience with them. I'm always interested to hear how these companies react to situations like yours.

Excellent advice, Mike, and I'm glad it worked out well for you. I have spoken to James Taylor on several occasions and have found him to be amiable and reasonable.

Also, I've been meaning to ask you for some time, did you ever have that medal made for your coin show about a year ago? The one where you had a thread and the options to vote on were the ship or the Native American. Thanks.

I've seen fire and I've seen rain. I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end. Oops, wrong James Taylor.

I don't see why anyone would be upset about ICG doing the right thing. I'm glad to hear that a so-called "second tier" certification service is doing business ethically.

I am tempted , but will only say the following:

1. I agree that James Taylor is a great guy and stands behind ICG grading.
2. You will consistently get a better graded coin in a PCGS/NGC/ANACS holder. This does not happen every time, but 9 times out of ten.
3. If you were to sell your collection today, which holders would you want them to be in?
Yes, it is important to buy the coin and not the holder, but what do you think the buyer will think of
second, after he sees the attractive coin in an ICG holder, He will think, I can sell this for 1/2 of PCGS/NGC/ANACS or " It will cost me $"X" to crack it out and send it to PCGS/NGC/ANACS.

Perhaps they are better with classic coins in mid-grade. I don't care for their Moderns at all. Attempting to cross a proof Kennedy to either NGC or PCGS is a waste of money. For real insight into how those coins are graded, buy an ICG PR69 Dcam Kennedy ($10 investment) and send it to either service as a crackout. Been there, done that. Not a flame, just an opinion.
