    I still want a $10 indian.
    I have a $20 saint and a $20 double eagle.
I like big coins so I don't have much interest in anything smaller than the $10's and the design on the $10 eagle dosen't do much for me.

Ahhh.. Don't ya just luv all that's Gold!

I have lots of Gold Eagles- not much history but you can't beat the view.

Love the modern eagle so much I purchased 3 beautiful MS64 St Gaudens when the price was right a year ago. Also picked up a couple AU lib double eagles at that time.

I will not be complete until I own a MS or AU Dahlonega. I live about 45 miles from Dahlonega and have visited the museum and the site of the mint (now Price Hall-N. Georgia College) several times. So Cool ....but so pricey ....mmmm someday!!!
  • I went through my collection and counted all the gold coins.

    I counted zero.

I counted them twice to be sure.

And I'm still positive that I have all the gold I need.

No, I don't. I need all three of the $1.00 coins and the $3 princess.

My favorites are the $2.50 and $5.00 Indians

The price of gold won't help me. The pieces I need all carry significant numismatic collector premiums. I need all but three of the type coins that were issued prior to 1834. The prices run into the thousands of dollars, and the grading on these items is very lose. You don't get as much for your money for a given grade as you once did.

I collect all US gold coins so I my collection will never be done. I don't look for the highest graded coin because I can't afford them. I have been sticking mostly to $10 liberties lately. I think my 1891cc $10 graded MS62 by PCGS is my favorite. Why- I guess the cc mint has a cool history to it. mike image

Nope! I still need 7 dates to complete my $10 indian set and 10 coins to complete my gold type set. Even when you complete a set the upgrade possibilities are almost limitless.

    3. I love gold and have a good amount of it, several pounds.

However, I never wanted to buy an old certified gold coin. It just seems that the premium is so minimal that it isn't much of an investment. Just MHO but shouldn't a 1920 coin be worth at least triple mineral value and a 1895 coin at least 10 times? That is definitely true with silver, but not with gold so I tend to shy away from gold other than as a bullion purchase.
    4. I like the Modern Gold Eagles and especially the $25 MS69 PCGS ones. I have been told that gold will go to $400.00 next year – but I have heard that before.

    9. Just arrived yesterday - 1870 CC $5 - NGC F15 ! My first of the big 3 CC Golds (1870 $5, $10 & $20). It leaves today for PCGS to cross at any grade to add to my registry set. I'll probably never own the $20, but this coin has me pumped! Later, CCG

As i write this reply i am watching strong activity in the Gold market at the bullion Desk
at one point Gold shot up $4.05 an oz. Point being the volitility is there.
IN the time it took me to write this quick reply the big boys came in to stabilize things as they
don't want the market to go wild and catch up to inflation so it eased back to only $2.65 up in 2 minutes this took place

I wonder how long the big boys can keep things at bay in the Gold Market. From what i read we may be headed to $800.00 or better on Gold.

    12. well. today we crossed the $325 maginot line, but the reason I collect gold is not for the metal, but for the coins (do we ever ask collectors how many Morgans they own since the price of silver went above $4.50?). As for enough, I still need 28 Saints for my set (not including the 33). I think I have about $1,000 face in US classic gold, a few gold eagles (I've yet to meet a serious Saint collector that likes the modern gold eagles) and a few random coins like a 50-peso, and some gold commems, but I bought most of the bullion type stuff well below $300/oz. As for type, I still need a lot, several $1, all the early stuff, $3 and stella to name a few!

If I could start from the begining, I would only collect gold. I would have less coins but they would be sooooooooo beautiful. I still remember the exact instance when I first saw a PR66 Cam $5 and $10 Liberty from 1906. Even my wife who shows no interest at all in MS 67 peace dollars or PR68 deep cameo Barber halves, pounced on those two coins and tried to claim them for herself.
I am well along with the gold sets I am doing on the Registry, but I am finding it impossible to find a PR65 or better, 20th century twenty dollar liberty. Another elusive coin is the 1915 PR65 $5 Indian. Another gold coin that nobody can locate lately is a MS66 or better type one gold dollar. Can you imagine seeing the entire Harry Bass or ED Trompeter gold coin collection all at once, all by yourself, and having time to look over each coin at your leisure??

Never get enough of gold. I'm putting together a date set of $10 and $5 Indians. Tough coins to find so this should take me the rest of my life...It's crazy but what the hell.

      I'm a nuts? Yes.
Should someone shoot me before my wife does? Yes.
      Am I an idiot? Yes.

As to my favorite: I'd love a 1920-S eagle and a nice 1909-O $5 both in nice AU58...but those are very hard to find...let alone pay for.

To finish the sets I'm working on, I need one Canadian $10 piece, one Indian half eagle, two Liberty eagles, one Indian head eagle, one Liberty double eagle, and one St. Gaudens double eagle. I don't think bullion price will affect what I'll pay for them unless gold goes WAY up.

        That's a nice '91-CC reverse. Too bad it wasn't on your 1870-CC!

I have 10 $10 Indians on back order with a firm i have been dealing with for ages. In Grades of MS 62 nothing real sparkling fancy but nice
The problem has been trying to keep them in stock for this Texas Dealer. I made a few calls today and i found the same with several Dealers
Hmmm must be a run on that Grade for that coin for some reason. I wonder if the Coin Vault man is behind this.LOL image

I don't really collect gold but I have about 25 in my xx97 sets. Here's my favorite, a 97 Eagle with a decent strike thru in an ANACS slab. Don't know what it was struck thru but it looks like tape:

Looking for an 1839-D quarter or half eagle in AU55 to complete my Dahlonega type set. I have been looking for 2 years now without success. My favorite gold coin is my 1847-D half eagle shown in my icon.

I've heard over and over Charlette and Dahlonega coins are cheap if you consider how rare they are. Maybe people don't collect them because they are too hard to find and are mostly pieces that are beat up pretty badly. The newer collectors these days concentrate on "quality" rather than rarity.

        Too bad...their loss. image

      12. Well, while I was recouperating from my latest bout with my "issues," I received a $10,000 retro Social Security Check and decided to put together a little gold type set. All that's left is a 1849 Open Wreath $1 (or "o" mint) in AU-58/MS-63 and a $20 Liberty-type I or II (preferably a CC in Xf-45/AU-50+). Eye appeal is a must.

The highlights of my collection are a NGC XF-45 1860-S $3, an ANACS 62 $10 '91-CC (most common date) and a colorful NGC 62 1923 Saint. I also found a pleasing NGC VF-20 '80-CC half-eagle that is clean and nice to look at.

By the way, I did pick up a colorful '84-CC NGC 63 awhile back. Now I want a colorful Peace to complete that endeavour. Then it will be time to take a break...maybe.

Thanks to all who put up with my nonsense awhile back. I am receiving treatment and am feeling better.

        Best wishes to all,

        Hi Jom!

I don't know who said that Charlotte and Dahlonega coins are cheap. They are far more expensive than they were a decade ago before very many pieces were put in slabs. Like their early gold cousins, both of the major grading services consistently overgrade all Charlotte and Dahlonega coins. I have yet to see a Mint State “C” or “D” coin in anything less than an MS-63 holder, and most of the MS-63 coins were not Mint State either. The AU coins are EF at best, and the EF graded coins are only VF.

Despite this rampant overgrading the prices are still high. For the most common dates you can expect to pay at least a few thousand for a “Mint State” example. The lower grades are quite pricey as well.

These coins are quite scarce as a group, but that’s no excuse to inflate the grades. If there are no Mint State examples known for certain dates so be it. A lot of veteran collectors have known that for many years.

I've really enjoyed reading about the history of U.S. gold coinage and the establishment of the branch mints (Bowers, Winter, Miller, Birdsall, etc.). I had been working on a U.S. gold type set but as Bill said those pre-1834 coins are tough. I sold most of the collection to raise money to start a business but held on to some of the branch mint coins (a couple shown below).

As is typical with Carson City gold coinage it's got quite a few dings but this AU-53 $20 has still got plenty of the original mint luster and some rose toning. You've got to love those big lusterous Double Eagles.
