I hate when people don't update their advertisements.

I just need to vent a little. No big deal, but a little irritating. For a couple of months in Coin World I kept seeing an ad from Paul Simms for 1971 proof sets at $4.95. Well, today I decided that that was a decent price and I called to place an order. The lady on the other end of the phone told me that the current selling price is $6.95. I thanked her for her time and hung up. Now I know that prices are subject to change, but a 40% increase over the advertised price? BOB

    RJB--

Paul Sims taught me my first newbie numismatic lesson. Purchased 3 Morgans and 1 Peace $ graded "Premium Quality BU" - Sent with my first PCGS submission. Results- Grades AU55, AU53, XF45, BB. Whenever I look at the ads in NN I always thank Paul for a valuable lesson learned.

I also learned about #5-Coins removed from holder are considered sold - even if PCGS is the one removing them.

After several battles I did get my money back. Only loss was postage and grading fees.

Based on what I've heard, Paul Sims has taught a LOT of people lessons. A scumbag dealer.

You should expect to pay $4.75-$5.25 for a 1971 proof set.

Problem is Covina, as a dealer, is paying $4.75 for the 1971 proof sets. Paul reacted by raising his prices a bit too significantly. But the reality is the prices HAVE risen and Sims should not be able to replace them that easily below 4.75 anymore.

A smarter way for Sim's to have won this fellow's business would be to honor the ad price for the first proof set item only and then new prices for the second and third proof set even if a different date. Then he would have won FatMan over. It costs so much to get a new customer via advertising and then to throw them away over $2 is plain stupid.

But Fats don't feel bad!!!!!! I paid $5.00 in 1971 from the US Mint for the same exact set and I was a poor struggling College kid then. Talk about OVERCHARGING!!!! That was because everyone wanted a 1971 set because of the excitement of the 1970-D Kennedy half and the 1971 was the first all clad half.

But Fats......as bad as Sims might be....... run even faster away from Coast to Coast. JNHO.

I would be suspicious of anyone who advertises terms such as premium quality, borderline, etc.

  • One I get a chuckle out of....one of the bigger mail order type advertisers in all the publications are selling 2002 Chinese Pandas....the ads says, to the effect, "these babies have just been released". Same wording for the past 6 months at least....

I wonder why we all have to "learn a lesson" in the coin market by getting screwed by these types. I bought with Sims very early on in my "coin" life but was lucky and got my money back. I learned early on that BU really meant AU when it comes to raw coins, for the cost of postage. Cheap lesson I suppose.
