Dealers, Dealers, Dealers

REPUTATION.....

"A good reputation is an enviable honor. It cannot be bought, sold, traded, or otherwise acquired part way through life, or in the midst of a business career. It is elemental, and exists or does not exist at the beginning. A good reputation grows. It starts with the first person to whom you are known or with whom you deal, and expands throughout your career as you come into contact with more people. It must be maintained at ALL times or it ceases to exist".

The above, is a quote, made by Mr. Q. David Bowers in 1955. The good, honest dealers have been around awhile and will continue to be around for us.
The lying, coin doctoring, Telemarketing, crooked, plastic pushing, Bs, Slimey, Scumbag, crooks, will come and go, rather quickly. Once they are known, spread the word. The good guys are rather easy to spot, the bad ones will hide and try to blend in, but like a coin that has been dipped wrong or puttied, the defects will surface and then dealth with!!! Zerbe.

  • Hmmm.... Didn't Bowers & Merena get sold recently? I wonder if Collectors Universe thinks that they received Bowers & Merena reputation along with the rest of the company. Just wondering.

Dave bowers is still at Bowers & Merena as far as I know and he still has his reputation with him.image
  • Bowers and Merena wasn't sold, but is now in a partnership with Collector's Universe... And, as fishy as this may sound, they actually don't get any breaks from PCGS...I've seen this with my own eyes when some of their coins should have come back better...

Right! You've never seen entire TV series built around coin dealers have you? But Lawyers, that's entertainment!

Well, maybe some of the worst bad actors get run out of the coin business, but certainly not all of them. There are some less than honest dealers that have been around almost as long as I have been a collector, and they seem to have more business lives than a cat.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Bill Jones, You are 1000% right. The number one bad guy of the coin biz. has been around forever. Every dealer in the country knows his name. I have received many PM's from dealers all over the country telling me of his most notable thefts, lies and deceptions. Some dealers express complete disgust with him, and swear that they do not and will not ever do business with his latest company.
The bottom line is, the thousands of collectors are not keeping this guy in business. It is all the dealers that continue to buy from him. It is the grading services who continue to accept his thousands of crackouts. If I have to be the only thorn in his side, then so be it. I have plenty of time and resourses to continue this little expose. Maybe Coinworld or Numismatic news will pick up on this issue and do a story, and hopefully mention names.

  • Coin dealers. I hate 'em.

Lawyers. I hate them even more.

Gee, I can think of a dozen dealers who fall into that category, not just one. Can there really be only one "worst" dealer?

    Exception perhaps...

Hans Tulving. Many long term collectors associate bad things with his name (and I am in no position to judge if those were correct). Today, many of us on the boards have had multiple transactions with him, and have nothing but good things to say.
Give Blood (Red Bags) & Platelets (Yellow Bags)!
  • It's funny how a kick in the pants can adjust one's mental outlook. Tulving ... Mr. House of Cards.

I used to get his flyers. You could tell the guy was up to something fishy. "Everyone who is investing with me is making great money."

    I'm glad he's been reformed.

Which goes to show you, none of us are perfect. Some of us make egregious errors and get whacked upside the head for them.

Consider the Israelites. A good example of what exists in most of us.

We're good. We're not so good. We're bad. We get whacked. We're good again.

    Reminds me of my kids.

Yes, reform can come eventually as one of the biggest problem dealers of the 70's and 80's is arguably the top, or one of the top names in the coin industry today. Go figure.
