Who do you think regularly monitors this board, and why?

Do you think that PCGS’s competition - the other grading services - read the posts here? It would be a good way to gauge the collectors’ wants and needs. How about publications like Coin World? They could probably get some ideas for articles from the often interesting posts. There might even be some people who read our conversations who have less than honest motives.

Who do you think is out there lurking? Do you ever worry about it?

Dan

I'd bet there are some ebay sellers lurking and not participating.

Here's a way to tell if ACG comes around here...

ACG completely sucks, people... never give them 1 cent of your hard-earned money... even if it is the ugliest lincoln you can find.

If someone gets $50 for that, then they lurk here image

There are a lot of people reading these boards who are not registered. Anyone
who wants to keep up with the hobby has to know what's going on on the net,
and these boards are the most used on the net. There are significant numbers
of people who need to know what the hobby is doing.

I know for a fact that at least two other grading services (not NGC) read this forum or did in the past. At least one of them actually posted here anonymously. I would also assume that the NGC people come here (and I KNOW that the PCGS have gone over there).

    Greg,
was that PCI that posted here when it was shown that they holdered a FAKE 1856 Flying Eagle!????
  • I monitor this forum regularly but post infrequently. Monitoring what others are saying helps me gauge the mood of this particular segment of the hobby. I also monitor the other forums: NGC, rec.collecting.coins and our own. I have found feature ideas and news stories at several of the forums.

I'm sure there are plenty of outside observers. If they were smart, they would be making product adjustments and enhancements based on the few good ideas that have come up here.

I knew Coin world monitored the board they just seem to know whats going on here. I think maybe coinage does too if they don't they are losing out. Numismatic News also monitors the board but I don't know how often.

don't want to burst anyone's bubble, really i don't, but i seriously doubt this board has much impact on the hobby, if any at all really. i mean, when was the last time you walked the bourse floor & overheard a conversation regarding the c-u forum??? sorry, but like i said, the population of folks browsing this forum is miniscule to the point of being totally insignificant in the numismatic board.

ok, now that i've made y'all feel so important, next thread!

Greg is right! I have been asked about things I have said here by Dena (NGC). Carol (PCGS) has asked me about things I have said over on the NGC boards.

A lot of people are not going to even register on these forums. There are many possible
reasons, but some will feel they might be accused of exerting undue influence or spying,
or they simply want to monitor the hobby without affecting it. You'll notice that many of
our more famous registered users will contribute by answering questions or possibly
pointing out anomalies but avoid stating opinions. It would be surprising if some of our
infrequent posters are not also among the hobby elite. While no one is hanging on our
every "plonk" there are large numbers of people who have to keep up with the hobby and
these forums are an increasingly important part of the whole.

Clankeye, thanks for the reminder about the FPC - it has been so quiet that I'd almost forgotten about those watchers!

There might even be some people who read our conversations who have less than honest motives.

    Dan,

I once received a solicitation from a prominent dealer. At first blush, I was a little bit annoyed. I quickly got over it because the solicitation was very bland and polite -- no hype, no skimpily-attired women, no pressure.

I've also met a dealer through the message boards because he read my posts, recognized that I don't like to be bothered by dealers and left me alone. Because he left me alone, I felt comfortable enough to go to him for advice. (I haven't bought a coin from him yet though...)

I even once made a solicitation to a dealer/collector here. He has a coin in his personal collection that I'd love to have. So, I PM'ed him. I felt awkward about it, so I tried to keep it as polite and low-key as possible.

I mentioned the above 3 examples because I want to point out that the circumstances surrounding any action may not be easy to discern at first blush. In the first two examples, I could have reacted by questioning why they're building a profile on me. And, in the third, he could've asked the same about me...

There are, of course, real lurkers here who clearly are out to take serious advantage of you... image

I would suggest that Coin World offer Clankeye his own weekly "Good Morning Class" column. Readership would undoubtedly soar and it might be the first intentional humorous self-examination of that vast and varied collection of humanity know as coin collectors (numismatists for you purists). image
