I'm Becoming Dorkkarl-- Pray For Me

So, as I have mentioned in a couple of other threads, I ordered a custom Capitol Plastics holder to put my 1957 double mint set in. Seemed like a good solution. I didn't want to break up the set for grading, but I did want to at least slow the toning process and keep the coins away from the cardboard holders. Now those cardboard holders served the coins well for 45 years (if you're crazy enough to like colorful toning) but, IMO it was time to keep them in a more stable environment.

The holder came this morning. Slots for the twenty coins, with a white background, and "1957" embossed in gold (daringly original, no?).

The Point of my thread is that when I had put all the coins in the holder and sat back and looked... it was just stunningly beautiful. The holder makes the set so much more accessible to be looked at. I have owned many 50's mint sets before, but was always kind of in a quandary about what to do with them. They mostly just stayed in drawers, tucked in the original envelopes. This seems like such a good solution to me. Protect the coins, improve viewing, and then keep and protect the original packaging.

For a brief moment today, I was transported back into the days of viewing and appreciating coins raw. My slabbed coins seemed somewhat diminished by the beauty of this set that lay in front of me. Each coin laid lovingly in it's place by my own hand. Their values not contingent on a number on the plastic... sigh....

I looked out my window, and I could swear, there by the tree... I saw Dorkkarl. Even though I don't know what he looks like I'm sure it was him. He was smiling and nodding his approval. I raised my hand to wave... but in an instant, he was gone. Leaving me to wonder if it had all been a dream.

Clankeye, with your poetic words you transported me to the scene of your enjoyment (and fear at the sight of dorkkarl image ). Thanks for the trip. image

  • Yeah, Russ. And I guess I did "Buy the holder."

Maybe dorkkarl was actually nodding to me because he saw I had Star Trek on the TV?

    hey clank

that's called a hallucination, or in the parlance of the hippie, a bad trip!!!!!!!image what would have been a really bad one and time for the rubber room would be to have seen karl's face superimposed on one of the coins!! winking at you of course. image

  • Now, I like dorkkarl, and I like the spirit with which he argues his point of view. But, as I'm now thinking about it, I realize that he would consider my coins AT. Even though they got this way by exposure to the cardboard in the original mint packaging. On that point, I would have to disagree with him.

BUT... Karl also states (if I understand him correctly) that it doesn't matter if they are AT. The only thing that matters is if you like the coin. And on that, I can agree with him. When it comes to coins in your own collection.

So Clank, can you can take the AT taint off them coins by spending them?!
Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.
  • Ronyahski--
I have it on good authority many of the local merchants where I live don't care if the coins have funny color or not. As a last resort I know the Coinstar machine at the grocery will let me cash 'em in for real money. image

Right you are, but I think Dorkkarl would prefer you hold onto them - in the cardboards, in the plastic, between your thumb and forefinger...

  • I swear to Zeus, I am genuinely considering cracking out a set of Carver commems and putting them in a holder of my choosing. This is bad... I might be losing it. Who ever said I could decide for myself?
    I don't want this responsibility!!!

You know the argument is always made that slabs provide a certain resale advantage... that may be true... now. But, I can envision a future where dealers are falling all over themselves to buy a great set of raw coins from you.

Oh God. I'm becoming a purest. A fanatic. A... a crazy person. As my post count nears 1000 I can begin to see some of the subversive effects this board has had on me. NO! I want to be a normal person!
Please, please... leave me my slabs. I beg you....

    Carl,

Are you ok? Are you turning into a "crackout" guy or just "cracking" up? Has dorkkarl threatened you in some way? image
If so, the FPC will take appropriate action, I assure you.
Are you an anti-slab mole hired by a plastic or album company? Just checking.image

  • Clank,
It doesn't matter what the coins are in, what matters is that they are from '57. A great year for coins, cars, motorcycles (panheads rule!), music, (right Lucy?), my birthyear and I'm guessing yours as well. Enjoy them my friend, that's all that matters!image
    Joe
  • Joe-- you are absolutely correct about the fine year 1957!

Mark-- My recent conversion has nothing to do with the check that came from the makers of that fine holder. Which is available in many different colors and sizes BTW. My integrity holds out! (for at least more than $50.)

And Mark... is this an excused absence from the board today?

    Carl,

I confess - I did not seek prior permission (written or otherwise) to excuse myself from the board today while traveling.

As this is my first (known) offense, what deem you to be the penalty? I will either abide by it or retain one of the board's attorneys to represent me. Whoops, is that even allowed? Did I just commit another offense? Gotta run.
