Buffalo Nickel Question

ElcontadorElcontador Posts: 7,561 ✭✭✭✭✭
I bought an inexpensive, cherry buffalo nickel in 6. It is a technical 6, because there is one tickmark in the buffalo's midsection, which is a grade-sensitive area. The Indian's face is clean, the coin is fully struck and it has bullet toned, ice-blue luster in the centers & a golden hue on the rims. No, I can't do a scan.

Which dealers who go to Long Beach could give me an intelligent evaluation of the coin? I don't have any particular expertise in Buffalo Nickels, but I know a nice coin when I see one. With its eye appeal, I think it has a shot at a 7. Normally I wouldn't care; its FMV would appreciate $150 in a new holder, and I have no intention of selling it. It's just that I don't own anything in 7.

It sounds like a '38-D. It also sounds like a very nice coin.

and if it's a 38-d, or another late 30's common date, the coin has to "be there" to make the 67 grade. Regardless of the toning, as many of these have attractive toning and almost all are well struck and lustrous.

If the coin is really nice then maybe you DO own a "coin in 7". If you think it's a 7, then it's a 7. See? Who cares what the grading service thinks?

To get a 67 with a Buffalo the strike has to be there, it has to have that 67 look.

Yes Tom, it IS a 38D. It DOES have the 'look,' but I'm wondering about the tickmark on the buffalo. You can see it with the naked eye if you tilt the coin just 'so.' Which dealers in your opionions are the most knowledgeable about this series? While J Cline has SLQs lined up in his case and ditto re Whitlow and Mercs at each Long Beach show, I don't recall anyone with many high grade Buffalo nickels there.
