BEWARE of These Slabs!

I have recently seen in person several Morgan Dollars in holders from a 2nd tier grading company that uses a greenish color insert and a slab similar to PCGS's in appearance (not sure if I can mention their name,,, however you may MIS-TRUST them). These coins were clearly altered and not mentioned on the insert. They were coins designated DMPL on the holder and were artificially frosted to appear to look like cameos.

The only difference between NTC and ACG is that ACG does more volume. Both outfits slab garbage, overgrade, and are run by sleazebags.

  • The slabs that look like PCGS holders are calles ''TCGS'' and there as bad as ACG. They were desinged to mislead people. Stay away from them!!

I have been sent many of these slabs to purchase. Fortunately, for me, the people rejected my offers and I returned the coins. The ones I have been offered have had altered surface/cleaned coins, coins that were harshly cleaned and retoned and just outright overgraded coins in them. The worst one I was offered was a 2 cent piece graded MS63 (Red I think) which was severely cleaned. Unfortunately, I haven't seen an accurately graded coin in one of their holders. For the January show in Frederick, Maryland, I will be giving a class on what to expect from the difference grading services and some grading tips. The public must be educated on these third/fourth tier grading services.

  • Good for you, MD! Hopefully, you can educate at least one newbie collector.

BTW, if anyone hasn't seen a TCGS holder, here's a link to an ebay auction with one:

I can't really tell what the coin looks like from the scan, but the holder appears to be a direct knockoff of PCGS.
