Hmmmm - looks kinda scary - how can you tell if it's genuine toning or AT?

  • I would say almost definate AT.

  • Its to splotchy to be original.

  • Possibly...But the seller name has been brought up on here a few times....I believe no one has ever had a problem with any of his coins, great feedback and he's been in the buisness a long time.I'll keep you posted when I submit it for grading..

    My money's on original tone.

  • I disagree with the notion that this is AT. It seems and I may be wrong but when there is alot or magnificent toning people always think AT. Tonelovers frankie and washington looked more AT than this one. Wheres tonelovers input on this!

  • $279 for a Stone Mountain !!!!!????? I'm telling you now don't submit you'll miss the return priviledge. That coin is AT and will never slab. It's a $25-$50 coin.

I wouldn't bother submitting it- there is just no way that the toning is original... the colors are way to splotchy... it's possible that good feedback could come from inexperienced collectors...

Fortunately there is a return privlege but also the infamous 5% restocking fee. So at least you'll only be out $20-25. Don't add insult to injury by wasting more money trying to submit that one unless of course you were thinking ACG. It probably would take less than a second for the regular grading services to toss that sucker in the old body bag. Return it as fast as you can and chalk it up to experience. Just my opinion albeit a strong one.
  • It says the restock fee is for slabbed coins, don't accept a restock fee.
  • That coin is just plain ugly, and as the others have said is almost surely an oven bake job. Send it back ASAP.

  • YIKES! Ok.I was HOPING it was natural...As far as the price, I know it's high but I collect what I like (but I like original toning).

I'm not in any way as experienced as most members on this board and I appreciate the feedback. I'll ask the seller if there's a return policy if it gets bodybagged for AT.

Still like to hear a few more opinions though.....Tonelover out there?

  • TexasBulliontraders should be able to give an honest opion also.

  • Ray lol...I guess I'll have to quote it's the old.."beauty is in the eye of the beholder" line...

I realize that it's probably "ugly" to some people but I honestly collect what makes me happy, I'm the one that has to look at it (or anything else I collect) every day.

But hey, thanks for your opinion. Appreciated!

  • Agent Jim..Thanks for noticing the return privelige is only for slabbed coins.

Here's another I probably paid to much for but I just "liked it"!

  • coin is 100% AT, get your money back while you can. PCGS will not grade that coin the way it is.

Here is a stone mountain you can sink your teeth into (if you like darker toning). A $30.00 coin.

    Stone Mountain
  • cointoast, the info we offer is to help not ridicule. I want you to buy the best coin for the money. You may like the way that looks, thats fine but your money would do better elsewhere and there is another one out there you will like more than that one. I look at it like this, half the fun is the thrill of the hunt, your hunt will continue. Get the payment out right away so you meet his 10 day to pay rule then take a look and think about what else is out there and send it back within the return period. Just my opinion.
  • Don't buy Arco's coin either for 30 bucks. you can get a PCGS MS64 under $100 (alot under for an average)
  • Thanks AJ...will do.

<< <i>It says the restock fee is for slabbed coins, don't accept a restock fee. >>

He sticks by the policy as written and doesn't charge a re-stocking fee for raw coins. I had to return a raw, and he didn't charge it.

I don't know diddly about whether or not the coin is AT, but I would point out that this area is not Jeff's specialty. It's only recently that he's begun selling anything besides cameo proof coinage. He's a good seller, but I'd be a bit worried buying something like that coin from him.

cointoast- sorry but I must agree that it's AT. In my younger years I experimented with toning coins a little and this is the type of toning I usually ended up with( I used junk silver to try it on). Good luck and I hope it is real toning. mike

  • I would first e-mail Jeff and ask him his opinion of the coin. Every deal with him that I have had(several over three or four years now) I have asked his opinion on and have received a honest answer. He has told me that's not what I am looking for or it is an inferior piece. Have you tried asking him about the coin since he has it? That would be my first step.
