This book needs to be updated. Many of the scarce and rare(per Breen)coins are not so scarce or rare, and some have been found to be more scarce or rare than Breen believed.
A dealer once asked me if I noticed any three-legged buffalos on the bourse,to which I replied,"...no,but I saw alot of two-legged jackasses..."

It's a nice book but remember that it's way out of date and newer references are needed to properly supplement it.

  • Great book but you'd think they could have come up with a better binding.
  • It is a great book, but I too have one in 4 parts.
    Has anyone had one rebound?

Great book! But unfortunately, I don't have one. If it's not too much trouble, could someone scan and email a copy of the descriptions for the numbers 2808 through 2811 and 2814 through 2817, 1982P&D Jefferson nickel varieties. It might be only a couple of pages. I had a list that I copied out of the local library's edition. But for the life of me, I haven't been able to locate it. Please PM me and I'll send my email address. Thanks.

The last two large Breen books that were issued while he was alive fall apart. The half cent book (aka the Giant Red Book) does the same thing. The large cent book which was completed and published posthumously was well made.

At least his book on Proof coins had a better binding!

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I had an interesting experience. I bought one used and the dealer told me he only had one copy. I was looking through a bin and came across another one. I decided to flip through it to see if it was in better shape than the first.

One the Title page, it was signed "Long Beach, CA... date, 1988, 1st Ed, Walter Breen". I just about freaked. The dealer saw me with both books and said that was odd because he was sure he only had one. He asked to take a look at it, saw the inscription and muttered something about his daughter sorting the inventory and mixing his personal books with those for sale. Pretty cool that he had a 1st edition with Breen's signature.

  • I bought my book about 5 years ago and it is still in one piece. It looks new. Then again, I don't read it everyday. I just look things up when I see a coin that doesn't look normal and see if it is listed. I found my 1937-S buffalo had a double die in the date by using the book.
