All that Glitters. The Golden Coins

image

There is Just something about this coin that turns me on. What is it? I have 49 more to look at today and just thought i would share some pic's and get some thoughts on todays modern
gold coins. What do you think about them? Do you own any?

  • Gee Kelso - could it be that it's PERFECT??? LOL

Whether it's a modern or a classic, some coins just jump out at you grab you by the throat and slap you around. This I think is one of them - Obviously it combines the features of both classic and modern, so I wouldn't fret about owning something like this. My only wish was that they hadn't changed the reverse - I always liked the soaring eagle. Oh well - gorgeous coin - nice scan too!

Yes, I do agree (somehow the RCM version of QE II is worse than the already bad BRM version). The Maple Leaf on the reverse is nice with its intricate leaf details (specially the proof version). image

I agree the leaf is very intracate and detailed.

Tell me, Where is a good source to find a coin such as the ones you have shared with me in your post?

The St. Gaudens bullion coins are OK, but to me they lack something. I think the word might be "character."

I've got a Proof set and business strike set of these coins for type, but beyond that, I'd sooner have my collector dollars elsewhere.

There's just too many coins and too little money to get hung up on duplicates.

MrKelso, I got my UK gold proof 5 Pound and Britannia coins from FUN coin shows in Orlando, FL back in the early 90s. They show up fairly regular on Ebay and the prices are not that bad (not too big a premium over spot gold). image

What denomination is put on the angel?

"The silver is mine and the gold is mine,' declares the LORD GOD Almighty."
  • trozautrozau Posts: 3,455 ✭✭✭
That is the denomination - 1 Angel for the 1 oz coin, half Angel for the half oz, quarter and tenth. It is the other bullion issue from Isle of Man but has mainly been replaced by the Cat series coins.

What are the spec's on the Britannia 24K 22K? I am now fasinated with this coin.

The Britannia is .917 or 22K fine like the American gold eagles. From 1987 to 1989, the alloy is copper which made it a bit pinkish. From 1990 onwards, they used a combination of silver and copper for alloy and it became more yellow.

That is wonder beautiful coin (but I can't be tempted to go to the dark side image)!

No. And for the years when they are set only, some come up on eBay as split set so you can get just the size you want (takes longer but doable). They issued the 1997 proof in sets and as singles but the 2001 was only issued in sets.
