I made a MS-67 FBL Franklin!

In last weeks post on the Bay State show here in Boston, I displayed my new purchases while at the same time wondering if I needed my head examined because of how much I paid for them. I cracked them and sent to PCGS primarily because I wanted them re-holdered reverse up, and yes, a little upgrade wouldn't have hurt either as I needed all the help I could get.

I got the results today and was pretty much floored. The 58-D Quarter went from NGC66* to PCGS 67, the 58-D Franklin went from NGC 65* to PCGS 67FBL, one of 9-10 graded by PCGS to date. I was truly astounded, honestly I thought the Quarter had a shot at 67 on color but was expecting a 66 FBL at best on the Half. I know, they're still the same coins and don't want to start a debate over what color can do to a grade, just let me enjoy this victory for now. image

    Wow. Congratulations are in order, without getting into the ramifications. That is a good day indeed.
    I had a similar experience of late with a toned quarter. Same date, too.
    But, to have the Franklin go 67FBL is nothing short of amazing! A couple more submissions like that and you can retire.
    Well, if it's gonna happen, I'm glad it happened for a forum member.

    First let me congratulate you on the coins. they are fabulous. second, as i look at the franklin the only surface problem i see is the two ticks below frankies hair. is that truly a 67 i am looking at or a fabulously toned reverse i'm looking at?

    Great coins and congratulations on the grades !! So much for David Hall claiming PCGS grades tougher than NGC, guess that is the case only when they are submitted still in the NGC holder. image

    Gads! Normally I'm not a tone freak, but I would love to take this coin over my "chocolate-brown" toning (er, just plain dark ugly toning).

    Wow, Tonelover. That is the nicest toned Franklin I have ever seen. I have 3 1958-D FBL but they are brilliant from rolls. Is this one from a mint set? Did you but it raw and have NGC graded it first? Grading can be mysterious. How can NGC give it a MS65 and Pcgs give it a 67? It is the same coin! Anyways, it looks wonderful. Nicely toned Franklins are so rare.

    Is that date on the Frankie doubled, or do I need my glasses? Either way.......I like that reverse, and Kudos on the grade.

    my understanding is ngc is notoriously tough on the business strikes, (particularly the fbls), while pcgs is tough on the proofs, (particularly the cameos and dcams).

    anyone else ever hear this, or is this just another urban legend?????????

    In my experience I have found them to be graded about the same, with the exception of the Bell Lines. NGC looks at all 7 lines while PCGs only takes the very bottom ones into consideration. So, I have some NGC's that did not get the Full Bell desgination that I think will cross and get it with PCGs. But the graded seems to be about the same with maybe NCG being alittle looser. This is based on my Franklins that I have handled and purchased. Now in this case, NGC was obviously very tight......

    LucyBop, that's been my experience as well--PCGS is more lenient on the bell lines, while NGC is more lenient on the number grade yet tougher on the bell lines. Now that would've been a more proper 501st. post, but hey, you beat me to it!

    Jon,

    NGC will now holder toned coins reverse up if requested (and they agree the toning is worth it).

    Now, who still says that PCGS is ALWAYS tighter than NGC?????
