Should we form a forum peace committee (FPC)?

I was just having a "conversation" with a fellow board member and we briefly discussed the possibility of forming a forum peace committee (FPC). This was partly in jest and partly serious, but we certainly need something like that around here sometimes!

Just off the top of my head - the FPC would have less power than the FTC or the SEC. It would consist of a committee or posse of "elected" board members, who would have peace-keeping powers of some sort. Forum members would obviously have the right to disobey the committee's recommendations and sanctions but would be advised to comply or face the consequences (which have yet to be determined). image

Who is for the idea?

I am willing to serve as part of the FPC if you want me to.

Who volunteers to serve on the committee?

Who is willing to abide by the FPC's recommendations?

Who is going to form a counter forum peace committee (CFPC)?

It is anticipated that we would need the cooperation of the following people, among many others, in order for this idea to work: Adrian (who has exhibited exemplary behavior, as of late), Lucy, Russ, DCAM (who, by the way, has been showing a willingness to cooperate lately), Clark, JWarren (oops, he left with the elections) and CoinDr (if he chooses to return). I'm sure that many other names will come to mind shortly. It would need to be a total group effort.

What does the board say?

Interesting idea. Anything to stop the insanity is a step in the right direction. It comes down to those with the strong words recognizing (and respecting) the peace committee recommendations.

It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • Im in. I'll be glad to help.

I have never found Adrian to be the problem. His threads may sometimes be controversial. That is OK. That helps to illicite responses. It brings different opinions. That is good. The problem arises when certain Members feel they must attack him personally and call names. Then the thread goes to flames.
  • Commitee meaning more than one so how many 3? 4? 10?

  • I like the idea! The Forum Peace Committee needs you!

It needs a good motto, too. You know, the police have "To Protect and to Serve..." what could the motto of the mighty Forum Peace Committee be....?

I volunteer. Lucky for Anaconda too. Because after his proclaiming to love to fight last night, I was lacing up my gloves and getting ready to climb into the ring and let him chase me around for awhile. Boy, is he lucky. Can you imagine how tired he would have gotten? Hey, I'm hard to catch. I'm thin. I was at one time going to make my living as a professional wrestler called "The Pencil." Would have had a bright orange spandex costume, with an eraser colored pill-box hat. Would have struck absolute fear into the hearts of millions. But, I guess I will settle for being a Peace-nik now.

Let it be done! I will join the committee if anyone would want someone as strident and bellicose as myself. One for all and all against the one (who gets out of line)!

I vote jmwarren. He is the Official Unofficial Open Forum Moderator and that forums has been running smoothly since he was appointed.
  • Let's put all of the Trolls on the FPC and they will spend so much time arguing among themselves that they won't have time to participate in the other threads. As for a motto, how about:

Ok, so far we have a rounded group of animals as possibilities for committee members:

    a bear,

    a snake (no offense, Adrian),

a goat (well, Klector Kid works, as a kid is a young goat and his icon is an animal),

a bull (Greg pretends to be a mean bull at times) - no JWarren, though, Greg!

a couple of dogs to choose from,

Clankeye, because he helped me vocalize my idea - but please, no references to his being Mr. Pencil, except when he chooses to "erase" any board members who are acting up

Anyone else? Maybe we will include another member who comes up with the best idea for our FPC motto. Suggestions are welcomed.

I think we need to recruit Windwhispersintrees just because his handle is so darn soothing.

Pushkin would be good. His large cat strikes fear.

Oh, and I have been told by Mrs. Coinboard that I have the right to speak for her in this matter. Yes, she is definitely in.

What a bizarre idea - and what authority would the FPC have? evict all people who post threads of a derrogatory content towards blazing toning/FBL Franklins/Accented Hair Kennedy's/other cool coins -

Or kick people off the forum for 24 hrs after a percieved threat/knock/slam towards anybody else's ideas?

I suppose some peolpe should be evicted - but who is to decide? Wouldn't that be the duty of comeone like carolj a forum moderator who works for CU?

I guess I am wrong - we NEED a forum peace committee and model it after the United Nations - we could pass resolutions, pay people to watch over the percieved bad peoples' shoulders and make sure their keyboards are not used for bad things.

Things have gotten out of hand here many times before, and what I like about this place is it's way of righting itself on its own. Shortly after the forum was revamped in Feb 2001 the population grew like wild fire and we were saying the same things as I read now. A year and a half later the only difference I see is volume. But somehow I still find topics that almost no one responds to, and to me that's a sign that things are going well.

With all due respect, I understand why you bring this up but I don't think it is something that should be tried nor is it needed.

If a couple or a few board members want to go at it in a thread, so be it. image

Change the channel. It's everyone's own self control that is needed.

It like when a woman called to complain that their local TV station accidentely aired a porno film for 21 disgusting minutes. image (How did she know it was on for 21 minutes?)

I don't think it is workable as everyone has a different opinion as to what is worth discussing.

It's like someone telling me that a coin should grade higher because of its "eye appeal", I just happen to disagree.

    IMHO. Joe.

    UncleJoe and others,

This idea of mine was at least partially in jest. I do think it would be fun to form a FPC committee and come up with proposed or hypothetical powers that they would have. But, practically speaking, I am afraid that we would need cooperation from forum members who would be unwilling to provide it. My real hope is that this will prove to be a fun diversion from some of the name-calling, flaming, etc. And, that maybe we can all learn to take some of this non-coin stuff less seriously.

Sounds like this place is heading toward politics. I think the whole idea stinks. So do I get kicked off the board for going against the grain here?

Lucy - I was hoping you'd join us. And, DCAM seems to be on board, too - we're off to a great start here. I'm beginning to think maybe it wasn't bear, but rather DCAM in the back seat of that car with you in Clankeye's story and that you two just had a love spat recently.

CCR - excellent ideas. As a matter of fact, you've just been appointed secretary.

Stman - watch it. Henceforth, no winking is allowed unless permission is granted ahead of time.

Agentjim - if you want to serve on the committee you will have to 1) remove your mask and 2) purchase a minimum of 5 of Adrian's Ebay items. And, no, I don't have $20 zillion dollars you can borrow. image

If there ever is such a committee, just make sure that an individual's tenure expires after several months, and they cannot again serve in that capacity for a year. But, rather than have such a committee, why not consider having a rotating Ombudsman? At the end of each month, a selected person or persons could simply report, naming names, on what was they felt was best and worst, most informative and most useless and harmful, as posts during that period on these boards. Then it would be up to the forum members to decide whether and where to spend their time reading posts. Also, it would allow really good threads or responses within threads to be identified for and accessed by members.
