What do you think caused this toning?

Did a set of rubber bands hold together a stack of Morgans?

-Jeremy, You caught me- I do like it, in a strange kind of way!
-BNE- It wouldn't be the cause of a rubberband as that would etch or damage the Morgan.

The fact it is toned in the same pattern on both the obverse and reverse precludes the 'end of roll wrapper' toning.

It wouldn't be rubber bands, because it would form a perfect X. What we see is something that was underneath something else, yet allowed for toning near the overlap. Very unusual toning. Also notice how the toning is on the rev, showing that whatever it was covered the single coin, not a group. But on the rev, one of the bands does not reach all the way. And if you match the lines up, it looks to be carefully arranged. My bet is that it was taped for some reason.

If it's been removed correctly, they sure will!

I'll go along with the medical tape scenario. A little acetone will remove the tape residue, without any problems, usually.
I agree, it's neat looking. I have a Morgan up this week with a "square" toning pattern on the obv., although not anywhere near as distinct as the coin in this auction. Trying to figure out what caused that one.

Based on the light hue of the PCGS certificate, the toning on that coin must be black.
