I love it! I wish even just a part of my collection looked like this! (His other auctions are pretty cool too.)

    wild colors, are they real?
  • A little Tarn-X will fix that and make it good as new image
  • how did that get in a holder?

I have zero doubt this one (and his others) are 100% REAL. I've not seen red mixed with green faked before plus check the devices and the fields and see how the toning creeps up the side of the devices. Probably in a cardboard coin folder for decades. NEAT coin!

I'd bid, but why bother? It'll end up going for some serious coin- probably from a Washington quarter collector who loves originality.

His Morgan and Indian cent are steller too!

  • now who can argue with the look of that coin...i like blast white but that is awesome
  • I just dont get it. Why would you want an ugly quarter in a plastic slab? I dont think i would want to touch that one if I found it lying on the road.

And I'm grateful for that opinion. The prices are HIGH enough. Can you imagine if EVERY collector sought these out?!

Confession: I can't tell whether this coin is AT or original. I would have guessed the former from the scan.
I will go to the ANA summer course and attend the session on AT and other altered coins. I want to be as smart as the rest of you . In truth, I suspect there are many coins that are indistinguishable (AT vs original)and many experts that can't be sure!

  • I absolutely believe the toning is original. I think the seller's attempts in this case to get the most out of the color in the scan actually work against it. It's too much. I posted on some other threads about a different coin he was selling. I have purchased a colorful quarter from him. The colors were all there, just a little less vibrant than in the photo. As TomB said the other day about some pictures posted, you can tell the coin is being hit with a very intense light source. The colors are there, but probably will not look the way they appear in the scan. Do I think this is a manipulation of the image that goes almost into a shady area? No. I see a lot of sellers on eBay who specialize in colorful coins, going to great lengths to showcase that color to it's fullest. Sometimes I think though, they almost do the coins a disservice. Sometimes less is more.

NWCS--- I think it will go for more than $100. Just my guess.

Edited to add: All of the above is of course, just an opinion. The seller in question here I know to have stellar feedback, and I was satisfied with my one transaction with him also.

As the consigner of this wonderful 1951-S washington, let me first say that I cracked this coin out of an ICG MS67 holder and I felt it was a "hope-a, hope-a" PCGS MS67 coin.....but honestly expected to get a MS66 back. Course, I was floored when it came back a MS65 - and it wasn't the only "surprise" I got in that recent submission! Anyhow, the coin is an absolute monster 2-sided coin with tremendous colors on both sides.....however, it is not as "red" as it appears. Much of the red is in reality closer to orange and deep gold with a red tint - the green is truly green. As a lover of colorfully toned coins (ie. lots of color), this is one fine quarter! (and undergraded too). The colors on this coin are so intense it absolutely saturates the picture - and that's the honest truth. This is not a toned coin for the collector of "delicate" toning. If it weren't mine - I'd be bidding on it but I just got a very pretty PCGS MS67 with colorful toning from Bob Z.

In a word - Ugly....it grades maybe MS62....but that would be a stretch.

    Craig,
After reading this string I have decided to make one of my infrequent posts. The 1951s picture was taken using a reveal bulb and under that lighting condition the coin is that red. I know that it might be hard to believe but it is. I want to thank everyone that has been visiting my ebay sight and would like to say that I am running extremely low on toned coins for my auctions and would be extremely grateful for any consignments.
