BIG SURPRISE FROM NGC TODAY! Pop 1/1 Morgan Dollar! :D

To my big surprise I got my 1880CC back today from NCS/NGC. To my bigger surprise when I looked at the pop report I found this!

Description SILVER DOLLARS - MORGAN LIBERTY HEAD
Category U.S. SILVER COINS
Denomination S$1
Year/Mint 1880 8/7 CC TOP-100
Variety VAM-5 HIGH 7
Designation MSPL
Total Graded 3

MSPL

62 1
63 0

That's pretty cool! - I looked in the PCGS pop report and there have been 9 graded with only 3 higher in PL.

Overall - Can't complain! image

That's a tough variety in PL (duh, look at the pops!)

    Looks really nice.

Congratulations Frank. Seems like a nice coin. I'd also be curious as to what NCS was able to do with the coin. image

    prooflike,

Actually, that is not a tough variety in PL or MS. Nearly all 80-CC's are a variety coin and both the 8/high 7 and the 8/low 7 are both very common varieties of that date. It's just that most people do not have the grading services attribute the varieties on 1880-CC dollars, so they incorrectly appear to be scarce varieties when they are not, and trade for little or no premium in most cases over a "normal" 80-CC. The 80-CC in PL or DMPL is a fairly scarce date overall though above 64PL. Most experts agree that there is really no such thing as a non-variety 80-CC and the only real piece that trades at a significant premium is the rev. of '78 piece which is a very tough coin in high grade PL or DMPL.

Rare or not, that's one pretty Morgan!

  • Beautiful lady!!! I love those PL and DMPL Morgans.
  • Yeah - I know it may not be an "ALL THAT" coin - but heck how often do you have an opportunity to look at a coin and say look - that's mine - all by itself! image

I sent this coin to NCS because when I got it in the GSA holder it was in, it had kind of a grainy filmy haze all over it. I couldn't tell what was covering the surface in certain areas, and since I could tell it was a PL, I didn't want to dink with dipping it and so forth and potentially ruin the thing. Maybe I was being over cautious but what the heck. Anyway - here is the before picture:

As I got it back, the surfaces have been cleaned up as much as possible, and the prooflike surfaces are now more visible, though it's not a DMPL surface by any stretch:

So - there you have it - the total tab from NCS was less than $30, but believe you me - not worrying about screwing this one up was worth it! image

    Hey Frank,

Nice coin; nice variety; nice call on sending to NCS.

I don't think Dragon was trying to put down your coin. Initially, your presentation of the "significance" of the population report caused me to step, or rather, lean back too. My first reaction was to reply with, "it has more to do with variety designation than availability," but Dragon had already covered it, essentially, stealing my thunder. image

And me an Dragon, with our strong love of Morgans and opposing personalities, hardly ever get to agree image, but as I noted, he stole my thunder, so ...

Dragon, I guess we are still at an impasse, but nice call. Now where is that icon of the upright figure with his arms crossed against his chest? image

    VERY VERY NICE

  • Gilbert and Dragon:

I'm aware of what you're pointing out and it's exactly right - I did try to gloat just a tad on the fact that in the NGC pop report there's only one of these - but by no means are we talking major rarity as such. As you look at some of the pop numbers for Morgans of different years reaching into the tens of thousands, it is kinda cool to see your lone little dollar all by itself. I'm not going to sell this and I'm not going to exploit it - but I AM GOING TO ENJOY IT! image

Frank that's really neat coin! and a nice story to with it. If it was mine I would consider it a keeper also. mike image
  • Thanks Mike - and the rest - yes it's a keeper alright - my son will be coming to visit over the thanksgiving holidays and one of our little projects will be to put a page of "our" toned and unique coins up - should be a fun father and son project and yes the 80CC will be featured prominently - along with a number of toned coins.
