Buffalo collectors....

Are the diagnostics other than the date that would identify an 18/17 Buffalo?

Take a look at the following auction (and the lack of a discernable date in the picture) and please explain to me how this
nickel can be positively identified as an 18/17?!?!?!?

  • I don't know diddlysquat about Buffalo's - but I'd be reeeeeeeeeally leery of this one. Seems to me that anyone trying to sell a bonafide overdate would concentrate the picture on the date itself. Look at it as you would a raw coin.

I'd run for the hills and never look back!!!!image

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

It looks like there should be enough date there to tell with an adequate picture, but that is a pretty poor picture. I agree, run-a-waaaaay, run-a-waaaaaay.
  • ccrdragon, there are a couple of discernable diagnostics on the 8/7 overdate that are easy enough to see even after the date is worn down, but you're not going to be able to tell by looking at that scan. For one, the "F" for the designer's initial is squeezed together a bit making it look a little more like a lower case "f" than a capital "F." Also, there is a small dye crack that can usually be seen just above and to the right of the top of the Indian's braid.

The seller does have a 7 day return, so if you want to pick it up and it doesn't check out, you should be able to return it. It's hard to believe a G-6 coin could be over-graded, but I wouldn't put it past that service. image

At this grade the diagnostics are hard to see and the die crack is not present on all examples, just the later struck coins.

The date is truly the best determinant of an 18/17.

In my opinion, it is actually easier to see the overdate on a restored date 18/17 than on a coin in G condition.

I have a restored date example and the overdate is very clear and doesn't require a loupe to see it.
