Crossover Experience Info Needed

Has anyone on the boards had any experience with crossovers from NTC to PCGS? Just bought a Long Island in an NTC holder MS-65, for MS-63 money. Dare I take the risk?

Cheers,

Bob

My only experience with an NTC coin was looking at a 1957 Franklin advertised as an MS67FBL that was really an MS65 maybe FBL. If you feel that the coin is all there and hasn't been dinked with (not harshly cleaned or doesn't have PVC damage) then crack it out and send it raw - my experiences sending raw coins has been better than trying to cross over.

Thanks, Frank. It looks all there in the scans, but haven't seen it in person yet.

NTC is a joke service. Your coin might be an MS65 and you might win the lottery. Most likely it is a low grade MS and/or has problems. Avoid this company along with ACG & PCI.
  • So you bought that Long Island, eh Bob? I was looking at that all week. Looks like a nice coin. I was thinking it might garner a 64 out of PCGS. If the coin holds up to the scan at all, I think you got a nice coin at a nice price. I would not expect it to cross same grade at PCGS though. That is just a hunch on my part, not definitive.

    Carl,

I was a little skeptical about an NTC coin not knowing a whole lot about them. But I watched it for awhile and decided to throw a "Hail Mary" at it before I went to bed last night. Hopefully, it'll be a winner. If not I got it for short enough money. I guess the concensus is to crack it and submit it raw. I'll let you know how it works out. Sometimes we get lucky.

    Greg,

Point well taken. I do avoid ACG, will buy PCI in person only. I find the older PCI coins hold up but they've gotten real sloppy as of late. I have a Bay Bridge on eBay and the BS&T board right now. Older coin and meets the 64 grade that PCI gave it. I just recently replaced it with a 65 in an old PCGS rattler. Otherwise, I'd have cracked it and submitted it.

    Cheers,

    Bob
