SERIOUS HERITAGE PROBLEM/WARNING

Three days ago I posted about losing all my book marked auction lots on Heritage for the Santa Clara auction.

Two other members reported it happening. One stated that they reappeared for him shortly later.

Well today I got an OUTBID notice on one of the lots I had book marked. Only problem is that I hadn't bid on these lots. I went to the Heritage web site and it showed me making 3 bids. I made NONE of them.

I contacted Heritage and they removed all my bids (1 of which was closed and indicated me winning the lot).

I don't know if this is a freak glitch related to the disappearing tracking list or someone hacked them or guessed my password (which is now changed) or whatever. Just thought I'd give a heads up to everyone to check their bid list on Heritage - especially those that had their tracking list disappear a few days ago.

Yet another reason to stay FAR away from Heritage IMO. A friend of mine told me they just received calls from some attorney representing Heritage about an invoice that was paid in full 1 1/2 yrs. ago. They are totally incompetent.

Or the are having growing pains. Even eBay shuts down in the coin area sometimes. Things happen, but it does not mean they are incompetent.

I hope this is still on topic, so bear with me.

Heritage had a coin for sale in one of their Internet auctions that closed last night. The final bid was $320 and there were 6 bidders. The exact same coin is on eBay right now from Heritage. This is one of their 20% juice auctions and the exact same coin is there with a starting bid of $251.

Does this mean that Heritage was the winning bidder, i.e. no winner of their previous auction? I know it is the same coin because the cert number and picture is identical.

Tks for any info, as I would probably bid on the coin, except for the 20% juice on their auction. I just would like to know what is happening.

  • DeepCoin - What this is, is a coin that goes to the floor and eBay is running a simultaneous live auction. If the winning bid comes from the Heritage internet site, then that person will pay the 15% buyer's fee with Heritage. If the winning bid comes from the floor, it will mean that someone on the floor bid more than $320. If the winning bid comes from eBay, it means that a live eBay bidder bid more than $320 and will pay a 20% buyer's fee.

    Hope this helps. Hoot

Deepcoin in the past I have seen coins start at $1000 then when the bidding opens the first bid is $500. I would just ignore it. I think Heritage automatically bids against you before the close of the online part so you should have been outbid prior to the online auctions end.
  • Heritage is a big company. Probably the biggest coin company in the world. They sell more coins in one day than most coin dealers sell in one year. (Something like $170 million in sales last year.)

If they were a bad company you would see criticism of them on this board way more than you see it.

They are not a bad company. They are owned by decent people but it's a big company and no one does everything perfectly.

But hey, if you want to stop bidding on their coins, the'll get cheaper for all of us.

I'm not discounting the problems some have experienced with Heritage but over the last few years I've purchased 40+ coins from them outright and via internet auctions (nothing tremendously expensive). I've only had two or three issues come up and they went the extra mile to rectify them. Hopefully they'll figure out the computer glitch and resolve this to everyones satisfaction.

  • You know that they can see your maximum bid and know how much they can bump up the price and still sell you the coin!

    Greg,
I have bid and purchased on many Heritage coins in many of the Heritage venues.
I have not had computer problem and find their archives an invaluable tool for pictures and prices.
I have never had a problem with auctioned coins except on one occassion I was sent a slabbed coin that was bent. I returned it without incident. Thus, my experience has been good. This does not imply that buying coins from scan images is the best strategy just that the logistics have been OK. I don't need to remind any of you that to see is to know.

Thanks to everyone for all the info,

I should add that I am a very satisfied Heritage buyer from their web site. I just had'nt broken the code on how they operated their auctions. The bottom line is that you really need a friend their in person to bid for you.

Sorry about the messup, Greg. I'm glad they took care of it.

My experience with Heritage has been flawless. Great company.

After I got off the phone with Heritage to get the bids cancelled, I wrote to Brian Shipman at Heritage to inform him of it.

He informed me that the bids were placed from "my batch bidding" page.

He wrote thinking that I posted a link that contained my user ID in it (in the Heritage links there is the SID=###### part) and someone clicked that link and placed the bids from my account. I'm practically positive that I didn't post a link containing that info since I have long been aware that these contain personal identifying information.

He also wrote "Never follow a link that contains a SID/GUID without immediately signing out and then back in again to avoid someone "following" it as you." which sounds to me like if I follow another persons link while I am signed as me, it is possible for others to become logged into my account? image

Regardless of what happened, it is all taken care really quickly and easily and without any real hassles. He also indicated that they're changing their system to require entering passwords to bid from the batch bidding page.

The only odd things is that he said he could not "find any missing tracked items" which is something that I believe 2 other members of this forum said happened to them.

You have been warned before, many times, and now again. Take it for what its worth. Personally, I'd heed the warnings.

Heritage's site is glitchy, unstable, and poorly designed. I don't and wouldn't use it unless they scraped the whole site and redesigned it from the ground up.

All these warnings, but I've had no problems with Heritage's online bidding system. Actually, I was at Santa Clara this morning, left them bids via a bidsheet, and was able to check my bids online tonight. Guess what? I won one of my lots for 60% less than my max bid!

I think I know what happened now. It started with this post . I used this link myself after I posted it as a shortcut to the auctions. When I got there gmarguli was in the " User Name" box. The password wasn`t present when I got there. So I went back to the home page of Heritage site and in the corner that says " hello "xxxxxx" " your name was there. Below that it said " if your not "xxxxx" " then press here. So I went to " if your not "xxxxx" " and it signed you out. I don`t know if by signing your name out was the cause of the mess or not But sorry for the all the mess. If your Po`d at me the only thing I can say is sorry and it was an accident. I didn`t change any of your bids and I don`t know who.
