Ike Corrosion?

My wife gave me a Littleton Eisenhower proof collection some years back and I pulled it out the other day to have a look. There are a few with some nice toning but the reverse of the '76 had these spots. Would it be bodybagged if sent to either PCGS or NGC?

No cracks about the Littleton album.image

No, I don't think PCGS would body bag it since this is part of the normal toning process. At the same time I don't think it could qualify for a really high grade either. Still I see Ike dollars in the holders with numbers like PR-67 on them that have the hazy toning that is visible on your coin in the 3 to 6 o'clock area.

Big black spots could be another matter. And, if they turn green, a body bag might be in the that coin's future.

The clad Ikes are mostly made of copper, and like a cent, copper is prone to corrosion if it gets exposed to moisture for an extended time.

Unfortunately Ikes seem to be prone to this type of toning both in and out of the their original government packages.

I hate it when you see my post before I can edit the spelling.

  • If that's a copper-nickel proof (not silver), it has nice contrast for a 76 Type 1. But unless you really know what you're doing (and sometimes even if you do image) it's not worth submitting from a financial standpoint.

I'd just enjoy them in the album. If any of yours have "rainbow" toning post some photos! image

  • Does that one have rainbow iridescence? If so it's not coming through in the photo... just looks hazy. Nice cameo for an early clad though (assuming it's a clad).
