The question is whether or not the prices for the 1999 and 2001 sets will hold up. I think they will for a while because the state quarter program has a long way to go,and many collectors are going to keep building their sets until the end. After that these sets may not be as safe a bet as some people think. I can remember items like the 1970 mint sets, which contained the mint set only 1970-D Kennedy half dollar and the 1973-S silver Proof Ike. Both of these items sell for far less today than they did years ago. And the investment situation is even worse if you consider that fact that inflation has made today's dollar less valuable than a dollar from the 1970s.
Why have these prices dropped? The answer is that collectors have moved on to more current items, and only a new influx of interested collectors can revive the prices for these 30 year old items. Those who collect and own them will hold them in their collections, but they won't be buying any more. Those who are new collecting will have to go back and demand those older items in sufficient numbers to rev up those markets.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
I believe your analysis is right on the mark. I think about the 1964 proof set, which at the time everyone had to have because it had the Kennedy half. That set, which the mint sold for $2.10, was selling for about $25 in 1966. Nowadays, unless Russ gets an interest in a particular set, what's a typical 64 proof set go for? $10 or $12? Buying a ton of these in 1966 was surely not the road to riches!
Anyway Bill, as I said I think your analysis is correct. So, when you do think the optimal time is to sell the 1999 and 2001 silver proof sets? Should we hang onto them for another couple of years and then dump them or sell them now? In other words, when do you think the demand for these sets will be at its peak?
