Better grades when submitting Express versus Economy?

Several of the veteran numismatists that attended/taught at the ANA Summer Camp last year suggested that you get better grades on your coins when you submit them for "Same Day" service or "Express" service as opposed to "Economy" submissions. Has anyone had any experiences that would tend to confirm this theory?

I've gotten some stunning grades using the economy and modern services. I've never found using the higher priced tiers to be better. The only difference might be walk-thru.
  • I was actually wondering this the other day: I've got a coin that I can submit in the $15 category, but if it got the grade I actually think it has a shot at, it would be worth more than the $300 that they use as a ceiling for that service. If you submit through the cheaper submission are you limiting your chance for the higher grade? I would say that I doubt it... I would think the lessor price you are paying is more indicative that they are going to take longer getting to your coin. But... I'm not certain about that.

So what if you have a coin graded for $15 that turns out to be worth more than $300. Is PCGS going to ask you to pony up another $15? I might be over thinking this.

merz2 did some walkthroughs at Baltimore, maybe he'll post his results.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I was told it only happens if you abuse the service. A coin here and there isn't going to be a big deal to them, but if 50% of you coins are worth more then you can expect a bill in the mail.

walk thru at the FUN show is a good way to go.

  • I have been wondering this for a while? Say you have a coin you think is extremely valuable, and you are somewhat paranoid of getting it lost in the mail or having it switched on you. During a walk through is the coin always in your sight? Are you watching it being graded?

I have used the express service on several occasions, and have not seen any difference on the grades recieved. Basically, on the cheap service submission, your coins sit around on a shelf for a longer period of time.

If there were any chance of getting a higher grade, i would send them all in at the 100.00 service.
In most cases the 100.00 fee would be worth it.

No you do not watch your coin being graded, the grader is isolated so the grade is not influenced. Or that's my understanding.

Only the extra $100 bill you put in their hand has any influence image

Kranky is right.I did a walk through for a crossover and regrade at the Baltimore show. The NGC PR68 didn't cross. The PCGS regrade(1937 PR66 RD Lincoln) upgraded to PR67.At the same time I sent in at economy some other coins(submittal #3083979).I'm awaiting the grades.Like you I wondered if they would be graded as accurately.

  • Although somewhat limited, my experience is actually opposite. I have found PCGS to be tighter on grading at higher service levels. However, PCGS is a grading company and I seriouly doubt that the service level makes any difference at all. The coin is its grade and will be graded as such.
