my opinion

I was just looking at 07quarters post on that Heraldic eagle nice tone coin. I kind of like the eagle behind the shield. I think the small eagle type looks like a goose (earlier type) and the eagle after the heraldic(capped bust type 1) looks like a crow. I don't know what the eagle on the setted liberty eagle reminds me of. but the first eagle I really like was on the flying eagle cent. my all time favorite is the eagle on the Ike/SBA. landing on the moon. hey it also make me feel pride when the TV said THE EAGLE HAS LANDED that was back in the day. the sac eagle would be better if his wings won't so long.

Give credit where it is due.

Although James Longacre gets credit for the Flying Eagle cent, the real credit should go to Christian Gobrecht. If you compare the eagles, you will note that Longacre's bird is a feather for feather copy of the Gobrecht's eagle that appeared on the reverse of his silver dollars. The mint was striking restrikes of the Gobrecht Dollars at the time when Longacre was working on designs for the small cent, and that was probably where he got the idea to use it.

It is also interesting to note that when Augustus St. Gaudens began work on his $20 gold piece design that he cited the Flying Eagle cent as one of his favorite designs. It seems that he was not aware that Gobrecht was the real creator of the work and that the flying eagle had first appeared on a silver dollar.

I agree that the Gobrecht eagle is a geat piece of work. The only designs that really compare to it are St. Gaudens flying eagle on his High Relief $20 gold and A. A. Weiman's eagle on the reverse of the Walking Liberty half dollar.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
  • My personal favorite is the eagle on the Walking Liberty Half.
Buy the coin...but be sure to pay for it.
  • I agree with the eagle on the Walker. I'm also one of those (few??) who likes the eagle on the Morgan dollar, especially when it's nice and frosty
  • My favorite is the eagle on the standing liberty quarter. I hadn't really thought about a second favorite. I suppose I'd pick the Ike/SBA as second favorite. image

the Texan comm is nice. it kind of remind me of Bush standing the with his chest puffed out like that. the Ct terc eagle is a little bow legged and the Bridgeport at first glance looked like a whale.
