Has the Registry increased your circle of friends?

I know it has for me. I am not the most outgoing person around, but through the Registry and the forums, I communicate regularly with a lot more people than I used to. I have met some great dealers, Andy of Angle Dees, Mark of Pinnacle, Laura of Legend, Mitch of Wondercoin, Tad of Supercoin, and many others. And I have met face to face many of the forum members here, and guess what. They are all people just like you and me(the me part is only for those of you who did not see my photo a couple weeks agoimage) I like the Registry. It is not the end all of everything, but people care enough about it to at least argueimage. mdwoods

  • It has increased my set of friends, but also my source of coins. When several online friends all collect the same type of coins, somebody has to sell something and it has become a good source of coins needed for my set.

You too are also right.I've both bought and sold coins to many of the members here. There has been many times that I've been told about a coin I was looking for by mambers.

  • Increased my circle of friends ??? No, just increased my enemies (especially the ones above me in all of the registry sets I am in) ... image

Actually just kidding, it has brought me in touch with folks of similar interests and tastes, as well as providing many other sources to expand my collection (and knowledge).

Now, let me get back to sniping that PCGS MS68 76s Silver Ike ...
    My eBay Items

I love Ike dollars and all other dollar series !!!

I also love Major Circulation Strike Type Sets, clad Washingtons ('65 to '98) and key date coins !!!!!

If ignorance is bliss, shouldn't we have more happy people ??
  • I am not sure if they consider me friend or foe, but I have had a great time, helping where I can, and getting advise where I can. As a whole, this forum has REALLY made my collection of coins, alot more exciting. I hope there is always a great forum like this to bring all coin collectors together. Great question mdwoods!

    Hello MDWoods.

Great thread! I have developed a circle of friends, no mentors really, on this board. They have gone well out of their way to help me in every way possible. Some of you poke fun at the Merc collectors, and that is ok, because we can take it, but let me tell you, there is not a finer group of people of the face of God's green earth! I have been offered advice, help with grading, help with legal problems, and some absolutely wonderful coins! Though I have never met any of these people face to face, I really look forward to the day that I do. My new friends and mentors have an open invitation to join me in a good steak when in my neighborhood, my treat! Tapp444, Python1, Fairlaneman, Grip, Dimeman, and others have welcomed me like a long lost brother. Dealers like Whitlow, Laibstain, and others have sent me coins on approval simply because I was a member of this board. It has been an absolute pleasure to be associated with the Merc collectors on this board.

Yes, I consider my circle of friends to have been expanded by the discovery of these boards. I look forward to meeting more of you, either on the boards, in person, or both. Collecting Mercury dimes is a hobby, making new friends with similar interest is really what it is all about!

Thanks to my new friends and mentors!

    Regards,

    Wayne

    Circle of Friends.

The word Friend is reserved for about five people that have been known for over 40 years, so I will say no it has not.

    Circle of Acquaintances.

Now this statement gets a very hardy Yes. Three local people have been met personally and quite a few folks have been met directly because of the Registry. None are considered Foes at all but are considered people that just happen to enjoy a mutual interest. Hopefully one day some will be met in person. This has been quite fun for myself and hopefully for everyone else. image

Sorry to pick the post apart but the word Friend is very revered by myself. image

Like several others have mentiond, I sure would like to meet all of the people I have shared time with on the forumns. I won't be at FUN but will be at Central States in the spring in STL. Also the show in FEB in STL. Hope some of you will be there.

I would agree in principle with Ken, that friends are a very special set of people. That said, I have found more than a few kindred souls who also collect Mercs. When this all started (the Merc thing) I thought all the major classic series would have a group like this. However, it seems that at least in this forum the Merc folks are the most visible. I would echo what was said earlier about help and support and in my own small way I try and hold up my end. To me, this camaraderie is what the forum is about.

    Hmm, probably true.

I've found my interest in coins has grown by reading what others have to say on the different forums. Interesting perspectives and insight, makes you think. That's what I like. I like to learn about coins, not just collect them.

I'm kind of a lone wolf with my hobby, so to speak. I have friends that enjoy my coins and the information I share about them. Then there are others that could care less, and that's ok too. To each his/her own.

I have a lady friend that had me look through her deceased fathers coins. Typical collection of coins that some collectors have. No big money coins, average grade, raw examples of coins taken out of circulation. When I started getting excited about the a coin I was looking at, I explained how I wished it was in better condition and the value if it would have been. It was an 1885 Liberty Nickel in AG/G condition. She occasionally remarks about the look on my face when I saw that coin. Like a little kid. image

Agreed, some friendships have been made and some nice coins acquired on these boards. I have learned a lot in both my specialty and in other sets in which I dabble. The amount of trust is amazing among members who have established themselves on these boards. I have had coins shipped before the check even arrived! I feel I know many of you -- although I am still trying to figure out others image -- and enjoy learning what makes new members tick. And, I have gained a mentor on these boards who has offered kind advice, shared my triumphs and travesty and parted with a few coins at prices I almost was embarassed to accept. He knows who he is. These forums are a great place when we join together in the collegial brotherhood, and sisterhood, of numismatics and share knowledge instead of flames.

Friends? I don't believe I have confided with anyone here yet. This has been a great venue to meet and
hear from other collectors and dealers alike.

I won't be at FUN but will be at Central States in the spring in STL.

I might make that show myself.
