Will PCGS bodybag for more than one problem?

airplanenutairplanenut Posts: 22,231 ✭✭✭✭✭
Suppose you send in a considerable rare coin... lets just say a VF chain cent- it has a little pitting but you hope it still has a chance to get in the holder...

The first thing PCGS notices is that there is corrosion, and into the bag it goes... they also, in their 10 second scrutiny (add 5 seconds for the age) they see that the coin is fake...

Will they bodybag as corroded AND not genuine, or just one of the two?

Not genuine will always be first and nothing else would be looked at. It does not matter what else is wrong with a coin, if it is fake.

PCGS will always put "Not Genuine" as the reason for a bodybag if the coin is fake.

They might put more than one checkmark for other reasons (cleaning & PVC), but not cleaning and not genuine.
  • Is there a new trend of collecting the bodybags like collecting the slabs out there?
    "Don't talk like an ignarosis."

I specialize in Wisconsin currency! Looking for information on WI national banknotes. Census stands at 12,318 notes.

**"Wisconsin National Bank Notes - 2nd Edition" is out!!!" Only $20PPd!!!
  • I'm fairly sure I am the only person out there who collects the body bags.
  • I just pulled up an old auction by Tele Trade dated June 30,2002.It was a 1796 bust quarter graded by PCGS as PCGS 02.If ever a coin needed bagging this is the one. Bye the way what does the 02 mean?

  • Fair-2.

The scale starts at the bottom with Poor-1 (PR-1), Fair-2 (FR-2), About Good-3 (AG-3), Good-4 (G-4) etc. In reading grades be careful with the abbrieviations for Poor PR and Proof PF.
  • In the advanced grading class, the instructors went over this fairly well. If the coin has more than one problem, they always bag it and check the more serious proble ie. fake over cleaned. Sometimes they may check two, but it is up to the grader if they want to take the effort.

  • Conder: I don't know if you can pull up the 1796 quarter that I mention with the information I gave,if you can take a look at it and tell me why PCGS graded this coin.I am very sure many members of this forum had coins bagged that looked better than the 1796 quarter. When I saw that auction I put it in my favorite file to remind about coins PCGS bags and the ones they don't.I f I sent in a coin looking like that one it would have been in two bags.

A 1796 quarter is a very rare coin. All the grading services will allow more problems on very rare coins.

There is a private mint gold piece in a PCGS slab that has been tooled, cleaned, and whizzed according to the company that auctioned it. Super rare coins are allowed problems.
  • gmarguli: How rare is rare? What would the population be in order to reach that status?

I don't know. I could only guess that the surviving population would probably be in the few hundred or less. Also, the older the coin the more problems they allow. Look at many of the early copper coins. They will slab them with light corrosion, but try getting an Indian cent with light corrosion thru. It won't happen.
  • Greg: Does that mean my bust dime(1798/7) would fall in that category? I know for sure my dime looks a hell of lot better than that quarter. This subject is very interesting to me.You and the other member are so full of quality information it's a pleasure to be on this forum.
