The Half Dollar Hunt - WOW!!! UPDATE!

  • Well, I just got another monkey wrench to throw into the mix. I took it downstairs to the jeweler in my building, and based on his scale, the weight is 10.3 grams, 2.1 grams heavier than an SBA and 1 gram lighter than a half. I am absolutely befuddled now.
  • Hmm... well if there weren't any foreign coins matching that weight produced by the mint that year, then I'm afraid you're probably back to the altered-coin theory, despite the amount of work that would be involved, especially putting the reeding back on. Maybe a magician's coin, designed to disappear inside another hollowed-out Kennedy or something?

Where are our error experts, anyway? image Maybe you should modify the title of the thread to include "Error" in it.

It sounds like the last remaining theory is that somebody monkeyed with it. I think you can effectively rule out the SBA dollar having anything to do with it. Quarters too.

  • bump.... anything new on this?
  • Here's the latest. I have no clue now what this is. It is too heavy for an SBA planchet, too light for a Kennedy. Enough reeds for an SBA but too few for a Kennedy. So it could be some other kind of error, or the work of a very good machinist with a lot of spare time. I am going to send it in to ANACS to see what they think. I got an e-mail from them today, suggesting I submit it. But I may not get to it this week. I will keep you all posted with the results.
  • any news on this yet?

  • Well, here is the latest, I jus got an e-mail from someone at ANACS this morning, and he believes the coin has been altered, and someone for some unknown reason, shaved metal off the edge and then machined the reeding back into the coin. I know a few high quality machinists, and this is NOT an easy feat! So apparently it was not an error at all. I just hope that ANACS still slabs the coin, and I will be the owner of a nice 1980-P Kennedy "Tooled, Rim Filed AU details, net EF-40" coin!

The US Mint no longer produces coinage for foreign countries, and hasn't for several years. They stay busy pretty much around the clock just producing US coinage, which is used extensively around the world. image As for the reeding, it is done at the same time as the coin is struck by the collars, which serve as a third die.

I've owned and operated a machine shop for 26 years. Tell me how many you want and what lead time you need and I'll quote you a real good price.
