Bay State show report

Drove through the rain/snow mix down to Boston to attend the Bay State show today, the chances of me finding a lot for my sets seemed great as I was in search of choice AU Barber Dimes and Quarters, high grade Mercury Dimes, original Commems, some common date MS-66 Washington Quarters, a few Franklins among anything that might catch my eye. I was very disappointed, after two rounds of the floor, there was nothing that had me even considering pulling out the wallet. I may be picky but my goals are attainable. Finding a few nice coins shouldn't be too much to ask.
There were surprisingly few Commens to begin with. Mercury Dimes were dipped or unattractive. No attractive Washingtons or Franklins to be had. Original choice AU Barbers, forget about it! Looked at plenty of MS Bust and Seated type just in case, finding a fresh, original and attractive coin was like finding a needle in the proverbial haystack. In general it appeared to me that most coins being offered there were very low end.
Activity on the floor appeared average. Wasn't crowded but wasn't dead either. Saw Diane Hagar sitting behind a table full of NGC and PCGS graded Moderns. Nobody was talking to her. A gentleman named Dennis King had a table of some superbly toned coins, mostly Morgans and Peace Dollars (Stman PM me) and he has a great eye for color.
Then, as all hope seemed lost, a burst of color caught my eye that stopped me dead in my tracks. Since I was in bad need of a fix I paid the stupidest money yet for this NGC certified monster 58-D Franklin and Washington Quarter that had come from the same mint set and were being offered as a pair. I need more 58-D's like a hole in the head but I couldn't resist myself. But when color like this calls, you can either remember it for a long time to come, or you can take it home and cry over how much you spent later. I chose the latter.
1958-D Washington Quarter NGC 66
1958-D Franklin Half NGC MS-65* (Yes, it really looks like this)
That's about it. Anybody else have a report?

There did not seem to be as many copper dealers as there normaly is. I was looking for a few pieces for my circulated (vg-xf) set.
I did manage to find a 1887/6 Morgan with toning in a old PCGS rattler ms63. Not great toning but not ugly either. I bought it because it is the first 87/6 toned Morgan I have seen. Better to have a just ok piece than to have no coin at all. This puts me closer to my goal. I need 28 coins to complete my Morgan set of toned dollars. I need 105 in all and am slooooooowly getting there.

I think there were some ACG holders under his labels too. Did you get the feeling he was too embarassed to show the slabs?
Thanks for the report. I'm surprised the show was quiet, since most of the shows I've been to lately have been busy. Do you think it was just the weather?
In one area, I do think you're picky - I'm beginning to think that nice AU Barber coins just don't exist!

That's cool, there's always room for opinion. I actually got a second opinion on the Franklin before taking the dive. What threw me for a loop was how vibrant they are.The colors are classic mint set and the transition from one to the next is right. I own plenty of them that look very similar, just not as intense. But it's simply a case of strong color on top of booming luster. I am quite confident in that and have no worries. Just don't ask me to prove they're real, I'm not up for that debate again.
Now to see if I can get to Nashua in the morning..........
Nice coins Tonelover!

And your new icon looks very nice....much better than the old one
So I guess I got lazy with the smiley faces on my post. I know he is very astute in being able to judge a coin. I guess he even took me serious
