Poll: Crossover vs. Crackout

With all the crossover debate, I thought a poll on crossovers might be fun and informative. And if you could reply with your thoughts/reasoning on your choice it would be even better.

  • I usually crack them, but I crossed two NGC circulated type coins at the last Long Beach. No problem and they are now in PCGs holders.

Well, so far I have never crossed or cracked anything out. I never will crack anything because I know I'm too careless to do it right. I might cross eventually, but I don't play the game. I do all the slab stuff for myself - not for general profit.

Actually, Jeff, I've been migrating some of my coins to NGC because I like the variety attribution service. Aside from that, I couldn't care less.

  • I've been fairly successful at crossing coins into PCGS slabs. I've cracked out and sent in the slab. The results are as follows:

Lexington NGC MS-65 to PCGS MS-65
St Mountain NGC MS-65 to PCGS MS-65
York NGC MS-66 to PCGS MS-65
Sesqui ACG MS-63 to PCGS MS-63
Texas NGC MS-66 to PCGS MS-66

I won't do anymore, but the ones I did turned out alright.

  • i,m waiting on the results of 10 crossovers...a 1952 proof set in ngc slabs and a 1964 proof set in ntc slabs...i guess i have made a concious decision to go with pcgs slabs...of course i may be whistling a different tune if my attempts get burned at the stake image.......i,ll get back to you on that oneimage
  • Well, I must admit I have never submitted a coin for crossover, nor have I cracked any out (I would be in choice #6). But lately, I've been thinking about submitting the few ANACS Saints I have to NGC to cross, only because I want to include them in my registry over there. I take away two point from all this discussion, 1. NGC seems more likely to cross coins, as there is no perceived bias (at least none I am aware of) and 2. the NGC registry seems more fun. Theirs is the registry for the folks like me that just want to have fun and share our collections with others who have similar interests. The PCGS Registry is for the cutthroat competitors. Nothing wrong with that, just be sure you know where you would find more enjoyment and satisfaction. My worst recreational experiences have been those where I just wanted to have a nice time but everyone else wanted to "win" at all costs.

    Jeff,

As for the winning at all costs issue, did you notice the thread on the registry forum about some guy who stole a serial #? BJ is looking into this...

Stealing someone else's serial # is really pathetic!!!

  • Let's see the results of your poll, thus far.
I notice that most responses don't address your line of questioning. I'm about to try the crossover thing and I'm not sure how to proceed...Send in the slab (NGC,ANACS,PCI etc?), crack out the coin, what are your thoughts? Twowood
  • Let me first say I've never played the crossover/crackout game before, so take this with a grain of salt. My personal thoughts as a risk averse collector is not to crackout, simply because you may get something back you don't like, such as a ridiculously low grade or body bag. I would rather spend $30 and my downside is getting back exactly what I sent in, versus getting caught in the resubmission game where I am sucked into paying more and more fees to eventually get what I wanted to begin with. I really view PCGS like traffic cops. Most really do not have a "quota" for how many tickets they write, but 90% of drivers believe they do. In the same way, I don't believe that PCGS has a certain mandate for X% of bodybags or Y% of crossover rejects, but a lot of us think they do. It's all about what you are willing to risk compared with the potential return. When I finally decide to cross my ANACS Saints, I will just cross, and the worst that can happen is I am out the grading fees, and I still have the coins/holders I started with.

Where's the option to crack coins out but not submit them to another service? Doesn't anyone believe in liberating coins?

  • EVP,

I didn't see that thread, but I must say I'm not surprised in the least. Not that I want to "win" the registry game, but I just compared my two sets on each registry, PCGS set is only 17% complete, and the NGC set is 37%, which one do you think I have more fun with? Here's a hint, I took the time to put pictures of all my coins on the NGC set, and I don't think I've even updated my PCGS set in a while.
