Ebay Seller. Questionable?

I noticed a new seller on EBAY selling a lot of high end coins. What seems suspicious is the picture for the 1998 $50 Platinum eagle in PR70DCAM is the same picture of one that closed last week. Seller wants Paypal from a prefunded account or money order. Any one know this guy? Perhaps under a new name now? What do you guys and gals think? Goes by Bedspread2003

    Edit:
All of his auctions do state:

<< <i>**Please note that the coin pictured is an example of the coin you will receive. All coins are guaranteed to arrive as described under description. >>

All I see is a bunch of cheap coins and nothing really rings any alarms with me.
The pr70 might be a stock pict or the deal didnt go through last time.
Prefunded PayPay means he doesn't want to pay credit card fees. Could mean he doesn't want you to be able to do a chargeback if the deal goes bad.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

He's no virgin - probably NARU'd under another ID.

I'd give it a shot if he had anything of interest to me.

Edited - Well, I just bid on a couple of his auctions. I'll let you know if it works out.

It could also mean that they only have a personal account instead of a Premier or Business account which only allows receipt of payments from your PayPal account or thru a bank account. They cannot accept credit card payments but they also pay no fees unlike the other type of accounts.

What is interesting to me is the different styles of pictures he uses. Most people find what they like and stick to it. The fact that there are so many different styles alarms me a bit. Also, when you see a picture that looks like the one in this auction:

Notice that it is one picture with the slab on the left and obverse and reverse of the coin only on the right. These are stock pictures from Tulving. Check their website and click on one of the camera icons and you'll see what I mean. Lots of people re-use his pics on eBay. Some, deal with Tulving extensively and have permission to use the pictures. I'm sure many others "borrow" the pictures from Tulving's site or one of these many eBay auctions without first getting Tulving's permission. One thing to know for sure is when you see one of these pictures, you won't be getting the pictured coin. Some sellers say that in their auctions, others don't.

    Wayne-

He does have a disclaimer about being a generic photo on that. Maybe that's how he became NARU'd in the first place?

I don't see fraud, just a NARU'd seller coming back from the dead.

Probably just a stock picture. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

    relayer,

Actually, he has that disclaimer on all his auctions. The comments about the Tulving picture were a separate thought and I should have put them in a new paragraph. That alone doesn't cause me concern. It is just something I see everyday on eBay and have been meaning to mention it here.

I didn't mean to imply there was fraud. I only wanted to express concern (and appropriate due caution).

My concern with his stock pictures is that they are from so many different sources. My guess is that all the pictures are borrowed. Sure, it is very possible that he has all these coins and went shopping for images. It is also possible he doesn't. For some inexplicable reason, I feel more comfortable when the stock pictures are acutally the seller's. Like the ones used by DHRC or R&I. In that case, the stock picture is of a coin they own (or owned) and they just keep re-using the picture. In cases like DHRC or R&I you can see the same style (distance, angle, lighting, cropping, whole holder vs. just coin, etc) used on all the pictures.

I feel less comfortable when it appears that the seller went browsing for images.

    Wayne-

If all of his photos are swiped from dealers that does raise a flag, but it may just mean he doesn't have a camera?

Since that's the case, I won't fight for the coins I bid on but because they're not high dollar items I'm not too worried.

    Thanks for the heads-up info.

I took a few minutes to try and figure out where they came from. The problem is that is stuff is pretty generic and there are lots of auctions like this. If I the time later, maybe I'll dig a little deeper. This one is kind of interesting:

The title and description say it is a 66 and I'm sure that is what he's purporting to sell. However, the pic is of a 67.

It is me that put up the coins on Ebay. I borrowed photos from past auctions and other websites such as Tulvings since I do not have a digital camera. That was the reason for the disclamer. For any of you who think that I am fraud, I have all of my coins registered.
You can view them under the G.W. Kitchens collection. You will see that the only platinum I have listed are the ones that are registered... as is all the coins I have. I have two accounts on Ebay. One for buying and one for selling. If you want to see where I bought most my coins, look at:

Does anyone else still think I am fraud? I could invite you over and personally show you the coins. hehe.
  • why don't you send them to me so I can personally inspect them?imageimage

I think you have answered the questions in fine form - no one here was calling you anything or saying fraud, just doing a little investigating - that's all....nothing to get worked up about.

in fact, I'll bet alot of the folks here are glad you have cleared this up and now are going to bid on some of your auyctions . Thanks for chiming in when you did imageimage
