Welcome to the forum. But don't base your collecting on what's cheap, base it on what really "trips you trigger". If you collect something because its cheap, you will soon be an ex-collector. image

If you tell us where you're from, maybe we can direct you towards a Coin Show or two. A great place to mingle and learn.

    BTW. Welcome to the Forum.

Anywhere near Kenosha? There's a show there on the 16th at the Kenosha Public Museum.
  • Welcome to the boards, Go buy yourself some coin books like coin world, coins, numismatic news. You might also be able to go to your local library and get some good coin publications. My advice is to collect whatever coins look nice to you. Don't collect coins that you think are cheap. Learn how to grade coins before you buy anything expensive. If you do buy coins before you are comfortable with grading, buy certified coins from PCGS, NGC or other respected 3rd party grading services. Stay away from accugrade.

    Welcome Orangehgpro!

A good set to start with is Jefferson nickels. Putting together a set from circulation can be a challenge (but very fun, and cheap, too!).

Where in WI? I am in MN. By the way, welcome!

Collect what interests you, and not what others say. I started collecting a year ago, and after 9 months I finally decided to concentrate on Walking Liberty's, Franklins, and Kennedy's.

Really, take some time looking at auctions and prices. Figure in your resources
and the type of coin you like. All coins are collectable, it's what you like and can afford.
Remember it is a hobby, not a source of income. There are exceptions (disclaimer).
Take your time and enjoy collecting.

  • Howdy,

An additional idea for getting started without spending alot is to go to your local bookstore (since you cannot find a coin shop) and look into the Whitman &/or Dansco coin albums available there. Many of them have started to carry them since the advent of the State quarters.
