I think there are 5 or 6 active young collectors. I don't think Cameron counts anymore. I think he's crossed the line from young numismatist to numisman!!!!
LanLord, you are indeed a young collector. But than at 54 I seem to run into a lot of young collectors, and dealers, and......Hmmm.....come to think of it, my pocket change collection of 30's and 40's material was not so old when I collected it. Maybe you're not so young as I thought.
I'm 29 now so I'm staring at the threshold of middle age soon. But I'm still younger than most collectors I meet! But someday I'll be the norm. How sad. It's like those things you read about what people who are just entering college have experienced/not known in their lifetime. Makes me feel old!
I'm 40 and one of the younger dealers at shows. If you think that's scary go to a stamp show. Most of those dealers are walking antiques. Some of those guys are so old you'd have to carbon date them to figure it out. I know--I'm a mean person.
Hell I'm 42, and in the 3 coin clubs I belong to here in town, I'm generally the youngest member...save the occasional junior that Daddy brings to the meeting. I had hoped...maybe by joining a few clubs...I'd be able to do some networking as I transition from military service to the private sector. No such luck, although I really do enjoy talking to and learning from the collecting veterans.
I think there are several reasons why "younger" ( by that I mean late teens to early 30s) folks aren't drawn to collecting at this stage in their lives...cost...the burdens of life and raising a family...perception that coin collecting is for old rich men....
I wish we could find a marketing ploy to draw the older Gen X and younger half of the baby boomers into the hobby...particularly single women
Yeah, the cost factor is a big factor. And it takes a lot of energy and work to get something out of nothing when you're younger. Cherry picking rolls, that is. And when you add in the slab environment, probably makes it tougher.
Collected sets as a child, but could never get those darn key-dates filled in.
I got away from collecting during my later school years,(not because I was tired of coins, but other intrests(girls, car stereo's etc) but started back seriously about 6 years ago.
Now I buy strictly key-dates, and have fun doing it. Picked up some tough ones over the last few years?
I mainly stick to cents thru quarters, but have a few halves, dollars from time to time. jim

Teens? Twentys? I'm 26, and feel like the youngest guy at coin shows sometimes.

I can picture you as a 5-foot man with a hunched back and a 3 foot white beard moving at a snail's pace
