OK City show last weekend was great except my car got stolen

Last weekend was the Oklahoma City coin show and it was pretty good. Scott Thomas, the owner of Edmund Coin, ran the show and did a great job. For the little he makes on it he has to do a lot of work. There were lots of dealers and lots of public. Everyone seemed to be able to do some business.

It was actually the first time I ever had a table in my own name. I must say the advice given on the board helped a lot. I made sure every coin I put out for sale was priced on the front and put my coins out in order. I also tried to greet everyone looking over my coins without being pushy. You guys give good advice.

The only bad thing that happened was my car got stolen. I gave my keys to the valet at the hotel I stayed at and when I went to get my car they couldn't find the keys or the car. If you stay at the hotel more than 1 night they use the same ticket over and over again instead of issueing a new ticket each time you park the car. I think what happened is someone posed as an employee and when I gave them the key they took the car and drove off. One of the valet guys told me that's what happened before. I've had the car 10 years so it wasn't worth much. Probably time for a new car anyway so I'm not too upset. Now if it happened to a brand new car it'd be a different story.

Very sorry to hear about the car. It sounds like the show went well for you though. You seem like one of the good guys out there in the numismatic community. It must have been exciting to have your own table for the very first time!

  • My condolences on your car loss. I don't trust valets and avoid that type of parking. Once, they almost couldn't find my keys and I was visiting out of state. That would have been a real hassle to try to get home if they had not found it.image

I live in Dallas but was able to get a ride home with Ed Hipps who is a dealer here in Dallas. It's good to have friends when these things happen.

It's just a car but if it was one of Lucy's cars from the 50's we would have been able to hear her scream all the way to Troll Island!!!!

"Outside of that, how was the play Mrs. Lincoln?" My condolences. I had a car stolen once and it is no fun ... quite bewildering, actually, and then you get mad. Mine ultimately was found, stripped ... professional job, door lock punched, steering column stripped, etc. ... probably gone in 60 seconds. You did not mention it, so I suspect the good news was, there were no coins in the beast ... that is what is really important! image

No coins in the car but I did have a great pair of sunglasses in it. They're prescription so the thief won't be able to enjoy them.

  • That really stinks. The nerve of those Okies. Give the word and we'll get a raiding party together. image

Sorry to hear about your car! That sucks.

Interesting you mentioned Scott - I sat right next to him at the grading seminar this summer. Really nice guy.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • I hate it when that happens!

  • That REALLY BITES.

I'm so sorry to hear about that. I hope that unlike when the King County Police found the car thieves actually DRIVING my wife's stolen car (and did nothing) that these pukes will be caught, and successfully prosecuted.

But... I'm not going to hold my breath. At my age, that could be FATAL. image

    TN,

    So sorry about your car!

Exciting about your first show, though.

Ed Hipps is a class act, and one of the real gentlmen in the hobby. Almost worth a car to ride home with him, wasn't it?

Keep us Texans informed when and where you're going to be running a table!

Hope they find the low-life that took your car. image

I've known Ed Hipps for a long time. He is amazing. This man is 72 years old and grades better than 99% of the dealers including me. He did a show in Austin Saturday, drove to Dallas Saturday night and slept at home, woke up early and drove to OK City to do the show Sunday. It seems like a lot but Ed really loves what he does so it's easy for him. It is fun listening to him talk. When he talks about a coin it's like he's talking about a person. There are a few stories I've heard about 20 times but that's ok. They are still fun to listen to.
  • I was thinking about going to that show it is only about a 2 hour drive for me. Wonder who else from the forums was there? Had I known you were going to be there I would have made more of a effort to attend.

There were a few other members there but I don't remember their names. There is another one in June. It's a good show and worth the drive. Maybe before the next show we can organize something.

Hope they recover it. I assume the hotel does not consider themselves liable? Was the person in uniform?

I can sympathize, having had to report my credit card stolen this week. Somebody ran a thousand bucks up on it.

  • I had my truck stolen while I was at an out of state coin show back in 1989. The thieves took it right out of the parking lot of the hotel where the show and a national convention of police chiefs was going on. Took five hours to get the police to take a stolen vehicle report on it. (it had been gone for less than thirty minutes when I discovered it missing.) The reason it took so long was because they refused to take a report unless I could produce the registration papers for the truck, which by law have to be kept in the glove compartment of the vehicle and so naturally were with the stolen truck. After I finally got them to take the report they found the truck in less than two hours, only about a mile from my fathers house where I was staying while I was in town for the show. Of course they didn't bother to notify me until 18 hours later after they had towed it to the impound lot on the other side of the county. The only thing wrong with the truck was the battery was gone. If they had told me when they found it I could have easily gone and gotten it myself. Instead I had to go to the impound lot and pay the storage charge and the towing fee. The only other items stolen were my snowmobile suit, some bicentennial half dollars, and my signed copy of the Breen encyclopedia. The large cents, indian head cents, and capped bust halves were still there.

This reminds me of my alley cat'in days. I had picked up two feline hitchhikers and.....the next day I really
didn't get rid of them right away and they ended up going to the construction site with me where I worked
and after awhile I had let them use my car to go and buy some beer. After a couple of hours went by, they hadn't come back yet. A couple of weeks went by before the police informed me they had found my car and it turned up right back at the construction site. I didn't file charges, I figured the girls were just out having fun. I was glad to get the car back, no harm done and I never saw them gals again. image
